Ribeye
New Balance* are pretty good and available in widths. They also have removable arch supports for those of you who might wear prescription arch supports. Just remember the money you save today might be spent with pain and suffering of new knees or hips after the joint degrades from wear and tear (Arthritis / Degenerative Joint Disease). Of course this won't happen to everybody. When in doubt, consult your physician. Throw out anything over 6 - 8 months old.....the support is shot (even if they look new) provided you have been wearing them with regularity. I can't tell you how many patients/Sr. Citizens tell me they DON'T have arthritis. I tell them sure.....and that car you bought 10 years ago still has perfect tread on the tires with absolutely no wear and tear after more than 50,000 miles. ? *I have no investment or shares of New Balance.

kuma
correct me if i'm wrong but steel toe boots / shoes were born in the US Navy for work on aircraft carries. reason being was if when a very heavy object came crashing down on your foot / toes the steel in the boot would end up cutting your toes clean off instead of crushing them into little bitty peices. a clean cut toe is much easyer to reattach then crushed one. It's a myth. If an object fell on your foot that was heavy enough to deform the steel cap that much, toe decapitation is the least of your worries. I've had a fully loaded van accidentally drive over my toes while wearing steel caps. Apart from stuffing up the leather, nothing happened. I even had a double capped boot (toe and heel). Worst idea ever! The steel cap on the heel is supposed to protect your Achilles tendon, but all it does is make it impossible to bend your ankle... like when you are walking around! Though it did allow for a devastating spinning heel kick.
CaptainQuintero
Doubling down on Derbo's advice, get your technique assessed and make sure you know how to run properly, it's more important than anything else. I made the mistake of doing a year of fell running without doing so and majorly messed up my hip joint just through improper technique ie something as simple as not raising your knee high enough so you don't engage your quads properly which puts all the strain on the hip joints 1
teewinot
I’m a big fan of minimal drop shoes. Altra running shoes are one of my favorites

blakeLA
I'm a brooks man myself (I pronate). Agree with all who've said go to a running shoe specialist who can analyze your gait. Saucony, brooks, new balance all make proper running shoes with real runners in mind. My dad swears by his Hoka shoes and he can still just hop out and do a marathon for fun if the mood strikes him. I think they look like orthotics but if they get the job done...

MoeFOH
Thanks to everyone for the advice (especially yours, Ross). I ended up going with Adidas. The Athlete's Foot in Brisbane city with their computer profiling of my Hobbit feet got me sorted. : )

Pink probably goes better with your yellow tie. Make sure you stretch. Don't want to pull a hamstring getting up off the couch.
