I was getting ready to burn a few empty cigar boxes in the fireplace the other night when I gave a box of Faux-Hibas that a friend asked me to authenticate a second look. I looked at the clasp/brooch which I had never done before. It was made in Italy. I checked out all the other boxes in my collection with clasps. Low and behold all made in Schmale Germany.

Has anyone used this to authenticate a box?

Are all clasps made in Germany?

Well I'll be darned. Nice catch. I just checked all my SBNs and the clasps are made in Schmale, Germany as well. I'd love to hear what some of the other heavy-stockers find if they go looking.

Thanks for the input gentlemen.

It's the little things that count or maybe a little OCD on my behalf.

Fellas, in some of the older NIVELACUSO boxes with the brooches, they used some Italian made ones with the city of Fiocchi on the top half and the country of Italy on the bottom half... Most of these brooches that I have seen were on '98 boxes and in my case a 24 cabinet of Fundadores...

Ut Oh...That is not good... but then again, I have heard of places filling real boxes with fake cigars so that may be the situation here. Just a thought.

The box of Faux-Hibas that I referenced were definitely bogus. The box code was for Jan 2000 and had a DE as the first 2 letters on the seal which is impossible. The Ds didn't start showing up until late 03 early 04 to the best of my knowledge.

It is likely that they change manufacturers once in a while. I do not have any boxes with brooches that pre-date 2000, only cabs.

Now in addition to the black light, date vs. serial number database, color-grading, triple-cap, no hologram, seal location, and numerous other checks, I can also check the clasps for country of origin. I really needed some more to obsess about :)

J/k - very cool find, Loki. You know I'll check what boxes I have when I get home.

Great point... but if we see and recognize this, don't you think the fools who make these things know about it too? Or is it not about them knowing about it all, it is just the difficulty of them duplicating it?

OK, so clasps may or may not vary... but other boards... you mean there are other boards out there???

I've checked every single one of my SLB collection and can't find a clasp anywhere. Do I have nothing but fakes?

The nails in my SPB's appear to be unidentifiable. Do I have nothing but fakes?

I am so SCREWED!!!!!!

Yup - the five boxes I have from 02-present are all german, but I have a box Partagas 898UV from 98 that has the "fiocchi - Italy" brooch.

I have noticed both Germany and Italy over the years, both are legit. With the cost of a brooch clasp likely in the 1 to 2 cent range I would not hang any hat of legitimacy on the examination of the brooch. A good counterfeiting operation will likely use a legitimate brooch. -Piggy
