Loki Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 I was getting ready to burn a few empty cigar boxes in the fireplace the other night when I gave a box of Faux-Hibas that a friend asked me to authenticate a second look. I looked at the clasp/brooch which I had never done before. It was made in Italy. I checked out all the other boxes in my collection with clasps. Low and behold all made in Schmale Germany. Has anyone used this to authenticate a box? Are all clasps made in Germany?

I just checked all my SBNs and the clasps are made in Schmale, Germany as well. I'd love to hear what some of the other heavy-stockers find if they go looking. Wilkey
Colt45 Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 If this pans out to be the case, this would be a good thread to keep in the suspect forum, so it doesn't get lost. Thanks for the heads-up.
El Presidente Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 I have never noticed. On holidays at the beach but someone e-mail Lise to check.......I am sure that she has very little to do ;-)
Shiba Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 All mine are from Poland??? Hmmm.. Just messing with you guys... I don't have any, yet!!!! Great information though
Guest cohiba Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 Just Checked 11 boxes i have with a clasp. All of them say Germany. Excellent find !!!!! Be curious what others come up with. Happy New Year !!!!!
First Lady Posted January 11, 2006 Posted January 11, 2006 Thanks for the post Loki After checking what seemed 2 million boxes ;-) all of ours are German made as well. BTW Rob all the sherry is gone and sorry for the broken glass. The party got out of hand :-D TFL
Loki Posted January 12, 2006 Author Posted January 12, 2006 Thanks for the input gentlemen. It's the little things that count or maybe a little OCD on my behalf.
wasch_24 Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 It appears that members of another board are finding clasps from Italy on legit boxes from LCdHs from the late 90s.
kab55 Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 I'll have to dig through my cabinet and have a look at my clasps tommorrow.
strayvector Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Damn good find, Loki. If you don't mind, I'm going to share this on another board that I frequent.
thschrminm Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 Fellas, in some of the older NIVELACUSO boxes with the brooches, they used some Italian made ones with the city of Fiocchi on the top half and the country of Italy on the bottom half... Most of these brooches that I have seen were on '98 boxes and in my case a 24 cabinet of Fundadores...
habanohal Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 I have 2 boxes of FAKE Cohibas from my newbie experiances a while back. But they also have clasp from Germany
Shiba Posted January 12, 2006 Posted January 12, 2006 » I have 2 boxes of FAKE Cohibas from my newbie experiances a while back. » But they also have clasp from Germany Ut Oh...That is not good... but then again, I have heard of places filling real boxes with fake cigars so that may be the situation here. Just a thought.
Loki Posted January 12, 2006 Author Posted January 12, 2006 The box of Faux-Hibas that I referenced were definitely bogus. The box code was for Jan 2000 and had a DE as the first 2 letters on the seal which is impossible. The Ds didn't start showing up until late 03 early 04 to the best of my knowledge.

I do not have any boxes with brooches that pre-date 2000, only cabs.

Now in addition to the black light, date vs. serial number database, color-grading, triple-cap, no hologram, seal location, and numerous other checks, I can also check the clasps for country of origin. I really needed some more to obsess about J/k - very cool find, Loki. You know I'll check what boxes I have when I get home.
Shiba Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 Great point... but if we see and recognize this, don't you think the fools who make these things know about it too? Or is it not about them knowing about it all, it is just the difficulty of them duplicating it?
Freefallguy Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 » It appears that members of another board are finding clasps from Italy on » legit boxes from LCdHs from the late 90s. OK, so clasps may or may not vary... but other boards... you mean there are other boards out there???
Van55 Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 I've checked every single one of my SLB collection and can't find a clasp anywhere. Do I have nothing but fakes? The nails in my SPB's appear to be unidentifiable. Do I have nothing but fakes? I am so SCREWED!!!!!!

Yup - the five boxes I have from 02-present are all german, but I have a box Partagas 898UV from 98 that has the "fiocchi - Italy" brooch.
dragon Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 I have a couple boxes of the original release Trinidad Fundadores from 1997 that also have the clasp that says Italy on them.
PigFish Posted January 13, 2006 Posted January 13, 2006 I have noticed both Germany and Italy over the years, both are legit. With the cost of a brooch clasp likely in the 1 to 2 cent range I would not hang any hat of legitimacy on the examination of the brooch. A good counterfeiting operation will likely use a legitimate brooch. -Piggy
