zeedubbya
Was looking at the box art on a box of RYJ this evening and was wondering what these medals actually signify? I know they’re on other cigars as well. Did RYJ win a competition held in those Cities and years? Is a Medalla De Oros better than a Y Diplomas de Honor? Couldn’t find much info on the subject. Corylax18
The Medallas de Oro or Gold Medals are Worlds Fair awards. I'm Not sure about the Diplomas de Honor.
zeedubbya
Thanks Cory, I thought it had to do with worlds fair, but I wonder what type of tasting or analysis was held to determine the “winner” of Medals or Diplomas with Honors? World's Fairs and also various international exhibitions throughout the 19th and early 20th century. The Brussels 1897 was an international exhibition and not a WF. Many of the records are known including all of the medals shown on all current Cuban cigar artwork. Those medals were actually won and are historically accurate. Would love to have been a judge at some of those exhibitions! It seems the honors were considered quite significant in those days as the ultimate award for a cigar. I would imagine the panels would be made up of some combination of experts and amateurs or even perhaps the exhibition-goers would be allowed to participate and vote. Would be interesting to know it was done. Too bad there's no desire for similar international panels today. Would love to see some impartial real blind tasting results in a controlled setting and some awards handed out. Instead we get CA and CJ spewing out suspicious lists.
