I was one of the first to get a Tesla Model S in Europe, been stuck in it for almost 5 years now. NOTHING beats it! At first I believed - but my own country Denmark doesn't move at all. Our neighbours in Norway are moving though. Almost 50% of all new car sales are electric/hybrid. I don't give a S*** about all the "against" comments, one thing is indisputable: BIG OIL is on the way out, the Koch brothers are soon heading down under (6 feet) and so it should be: Most of the wars in the last 50-60 years at least have been fought over this black S***, that for certain.

In Europe big oil may be on the way out, but here in the US where we drive big full size SUV's and pickup trucks with gas and diesel powered V-8's oil isn't going anywhere. Not for many decades. I can't fathom a full size pickup truck weighing 6,000 LBS being powered by an electric motor and batteries. Not gonna happen come hell or high water especially with gasoline prices here under $2.50 per gallon. My 2c

They keep crying wolf on that.  By my count, Peak oil has been declared four times since the 1960's.  Seems that every few years we are being told that oil is on its way out ... so far, the doomsayers have always been proved wrong.

If there is one good thing to be said about the Crusade Against Internal Combustion, it is that just as automotive design has become more bland and boring, technology has become more interesting.  The engineering has become far more elegant these days...

I remember watching Top Gear where they demonstrated an electric car and it seemed futuristic. Fast forward a couple of years and you see them everywhere (in Holland)

Which one? The Hammerhead Eagle i-Thrust, aka "geoff", or the G Wiz?

I bought a second hand Nissan Leaf, and I have lots of good things to say about electric conveyances.

You can get a "level 2" charger installed for relatively cheap - in the US it is a 220v charger - that makes charging up really quick.

I, however, have never needed it, as I just plug it in every night like a smartphone.

It wouldn't be possible to have it be my only car at this point, but if the family goes on a longer than 60 mile round-trip, we take the wife's car.

There is no maintenance (no transmission, no breakjobs, no engine wear) and it is actually pretty zippy.

Still, I can't see it happening faster than 15 years, even in places where the infrastructure is being deployed rapidly. The interia behind gas powered vehicles is just too big a hurdle to overcome more quickly than that....

No brake jobs? Hows that?

The day when the electric engine is cheaper to purchase and run than a combustion motor, it is all over.

Most electricity still comes from fossil fuels.  Just wanted to point that out.  Because that matters

Price and cost are important factors, to be sure.

But they are not everything.

What's the point of having a cheap electric car if I cannot hitch up the trailer or caravan and drive 500 kilometres to my destination?  Who will pay for the infrastructure -- from buried cables to charging stations to power stations -- to fill those millions of batteries?  What does the farmer do who has to use his 4x4 on his farm every day?

I can drive 600K, fill up the car in five minutes (and myself with caffeine in the same time) and be ready for another 600K.  Until electric cars can be recharged in that time, I would not even consider them.  Not to mention that when I am in Europe (usually in winter) I can expect to drive in temperatures where even diesel is a risk ... let alone battery power.
