Wow...didn’t see this coming.  Is Brian Cashman a genius, or the village idiot?

Tim Kurkjian described it as Boone "just [getting] his driver's license, and [being] handed the keys to a Lamborghini."

My money says he ends up planting it in a ditch. One can only hope :D

Meh, Boone seems like a smart and personable guy. His father was a manager for many years. I think he stands a fair chance. I was rooting for Hensley Muelens, personally, but I'm ok with him coming back to the Giants, too.

As a lifelong Yankee fan I was sorry to see Girardi go. It was quite an accomplishment over the last 10 years under his leadership they averaged 91 wins in a season. I was not pleased when they did not bother to even interview David Cone or John Flaherty for the post.  I thought this was short sighted of them. Arron Boone had one of the all time walk off hits against the Red Sox and is in Yankee lore. He is a smart baseball guy and with the cybermetric craze I think he may turn out ok. Don’t forget he is at the helm of one of the best Yankee teams dare I say of all time!  Time will tell. Go Yanks!

I can appreciate that everyone seems to think that Boone is personable and has a good grasp of sabermetrics, but I've never understood the "his father was a _____" argument. My father was an electrician in a steel mill for 37 years. You should definitely NOT hire me to re-wire your house

Well, this is a bit different. Its' not like his Dad was a baseball manager, but Aaron has been working as an insurance salesman his whole life. He had a long career as a player and has been working as an analyst. This is just taking a different job in the same field.

Agreed! His own credentials in the field carry some weight, independent of what his dad did or did not do.

It will be hard to tell how good he will be because baring injury the team should win around 90 games regardless of who is the manager.  He seems likeable and if he can be media savy the team should take care of the rest for him to be liked.  It really is a lose lose situation though. If they win 95 it was because they were loaded and if they win 85 it is because he screwed it up.  Personally I wanted Beltran but its tough to get worked up about a manager as the last time I did was when they hired Torre and that worked out pretty well.

So true. For the first couple of years he managed the Giants, I thought Bruce Bochy was a dope. Shows what I know. What I do like about Boone is it seems like he has the right combination of polish to deal wirh all that comes with being the manager of the Yankees, and at the same time, he seems to have the personality to keep the young players enthusiastic. Like most non-Yankee fans, I've always enjoyed rooting against them, but this version of the team is a lot of fun.

This surely has nothing to do with every current team trying to sign the Japanese sensation Shohei Ohtani as a free agent?

I too was surprised. The interesting thing about Joe Torre is that when he was signed on as Manager in 1996 it garnered a less welcoming response from Yankee fans than the appointment of Boone. Boone's appointment is more bewilderment, whilst Torre's appointment was more indifference and seething anger. After all, Torre had a losing record as a Manager over 14 seasons in 3 stints with the Mets, Braves and Cardinals, he didn't seem to warrant and great expectations, but he built a dynasty. I wonder if Boone can do the same?

Pisses me off as a Yankees fan.  Plenty of better options out there including people like Muelens who have strong ties to the organization.  But the Boones are arguably the premier three-generation baseball family, so his level of exposure to premier managers and coaches runs deep.  I wish him the best of luck as a fan but I just don't know what to think about the new Steinbrenners and why they keep the god awful Brian Cashman.......
