Jauwels Posted June 15, 2017 Posted June 15, 2017 Hello friends, I have recent bought 2 boxes of partagas d4 TEA OCT 15. But unfortunately this boxes have no taste. I have read that the New boxes 17 are great. Someone smoke this? Normaly they have much Power with great aging potentieel! Best regards, Jauwels
El Presidente Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 The D4 has never been an overtly powerful cigar for me. Mid bodied. Plenty of good boxes produced in 2015 and first half 2016. It is getting harder and harder to get great boxes currently. When selecting, a pungent aroma at cold + a good wrapper will make all the difference. 4
kinglingcheng Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 mate trust me , D4 is always overrated by some guys. I have 1 box of D4 (15s), very medium body, medium mild kind of cigar, if it's not in perfect condition to smoke , probably taste like spicy, earthy leather shit , and goona make you so sick . u feel like you just smoking some alutaceous paper mixed with carbons. No one really know which box or which year is good for real, Be honest, every one get different tastes. for me to avoid buying D4 is a wise choice, rather try some SP series or E series. If u like rich full body cigar, just some something else like Ramon SS, Bolivia Royal Corona, Juan Lopz No.2, 1
Winchester21 Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 This has been one of my go to cigars for years In good times you could buy PSPs at will. When they are on they rank near the top IMO. This has been a tough year for many brands with this cigar taking a huge hit. I have bought 1 box here this year and the quality was medium but a decent smoke by any standard. Good but not great. Outside the FOH I have seen some real garbage. I am putting this one on hold until Rob gives the word that the good stuff is back. Plenty of other cigars this size to fill the void. 2
SCgarman Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 I have a MUL 14 box that is very good albeit the wrappers are light and a bit rustic. But they are creamy with that paprika spice and very smooth with great draw so far. Not a powerful cigar by any means. Medium bodied at best. 1
Akela3rd Posted June 16, 2017 Posted June 16, 2017 I've got a NOV 15 box, only had a couple and only recently and they're really good. Earthy definitely, spicy too at the finish and a cigar I have to really fancy and be in the mood for. Others I've had have been quite harsh and if not unpleasant, certainly a bit off-putting. Need a good box and a run up - like you do with a Cazadores.Thunder & Lightening '75-'15 1
Jauwels Posted June 17, 2017 Author Posted June 17, 2017 Thank you guy 's for this Information! I think i going to look for good boxes from ramon ss and bolivar rc!?
NSXCIGAR Posted June 18, 2017 Posted June 18, 2017 Agree with the crowd generally here. D4 to me has become basically a true medium crowd-pleaser cigar that seems to have basically two flavors these days--paprika/pepper and cream. The profile is not my cup of tea. But when you can get some richness and distinction in the flavors and when that rare hint of Partagas earthiness shows up, they can be very good cigars. Unfortunately, D4 quality is all over the place as it is now the best-selling Havana cigar having supplanted the Monte 4. Very tough to get a great one. I've pretty much given up on it. Those great D4s are probably 1/100 these days. 1
Laxman Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 I am a huge fan of the D4. Have boxes from 1990 till present. Always has been a very consistent cigar but more on the medium side. For me it has been a great aging cigar and with 10 plus years on them they can be something special. To many factors to go into on why you may not be getting any taste, such as storage, vendor, code, bad year, bad box, etc. This is just my opinion, but I have not been happy with production as a whole from 2015 till present. When buying regular production boxes from 2015 on I try and find boxes rolled at a mother factory. The AMO 2015 D4's have been decent. But I have been more inclined to just pick up boxes with a few years of age from 2013/2014. The buying by code system is not flawless and does not guarantee you a perfect box, but I have had success with it. The PSP and HQ boxes the Prez puts out are always good buys also. Look around and see what people are buying and see what codes seem to be smoking well and buy off of that. Also if the boxes where in the air long during shipping sometimes I have found it can take up to 3 months to acclimate to your humidor. Have smoked boxes off the truck and not been impressed then a few months later when I put one out it is a totally different smoke. 1
PapaDisco Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 I've also found the PSD 4 to be a very reliable and flavorful cigar. I've never had a 'flat' box. Now I've had some other marcas that, rarely, went flat but came back in force after 6 months down. Can't really explain it, as to me it makes no sense that a cigar can go from flavorless to flavorful (other way round makes sense for certain), but some Upmann PC's I've experienced that with and a box of Punch Punch. If I had a couple boxes of PSD4 going flat I'd stash them down deep and cool for 6 months and try again. 1
TheLiquidGator Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 Take a peak at the box I just posted in the "What's your latest CC purchase" thread. Am thinking these will not be flat tasting. 1
Hurltim Posted June 19, 2017 Posted June 19, 2017 A D4 is a great everyday smoke. Aged ones turn into something special. That being said, the D5 gets my nod for being the better of the two. More complex and assertive. Great smoke. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk 3
TheFullMontecristo Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 past D4 purchases have had some variance in flavor for me. I purchased a particular box (RAE JUN 15) from our host recently and the flavor is spot on for me where previous boxes have been less satisfying. 1

jfire Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 If you are not buying two boxes a year it's a mistake imo. With 5 plus years they can become special. Do you know what's never on secondary sales sites? D4s.... if they don't age like you wished sell for a little profit for your trouble of humidor time....Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 3

PSD4 right up until around 1998-1999 were absolute powerhouses and anything but medium, especially prior to the 1995 blend changes. These cigars were absolute beasts that would kick you right in the nuts. I assume you may have had a different experience? The current blend is also nothing like it was even 5-10 years ago. This paprika & cream profile is something I never experienced in D4 until recently. The old Partagas character has all but vanished from these cigars. To me they have more in common with HdM than the rest of the Partagas lineup. And I'm also not sure I would use the term "inconsistent"--in fact, I think they are consistently below average with about 1 out of 50 being what I would give 92+ points to. And I have had some that are totally bland. 3
Cep Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 My first box ever of D4 was from 2015 and that box was amazing. I got this green pepper taste + TWANG! that I have been searching for ever since! Oddly enough my second box was from 2010 and wasn't nearly as good. Tight draw to boot. 1

Yes, when they are on, they can be good. But the profile really needs to be there and it's so rare to find the blend performing well in these. You hit the jackpot when you get the green pepper (or paprika as some call it), cream and that bit of earthiness that can give it the twang all present and in balance. If they were like that all the time I'd actually buy some despite the profile not being my favorite. I have no problem buying a cigar that delivers and knows what it wants to be even if I'm not a huge fan of the profile. Perfect example is Sancho Panza. Not a huge fan of that profile, but they seem to really be performing well and the blend is really showing up, and I can appreciate that. 1
GavLew79 Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 I have PTR NOV 15 from here and the 3 I've had were great. Granted it's a small sample size but they were as good as the PMU JUL 14 box I smoked. Far too many variables to judge a single box. I'd put them back in storage and try again in 6 months. Smoke 3 on the trot, if they're all bad, put them back again...You might find a "sweet spot" or they might just be shite. Welcome to the lottery. 1
