Do we know at which customs office(s) this is this occurring?  New York?  Chicago?  Buddy of mine has a package stuck in ISC Chicago for over 2 weeks.  I have a bad feeling about this...

If I would have that kind of money to dish out $4000.00 for 6 cigars than I could have flown there to get them personally and bring them home.

This was certainly done under the heading of "inspection" and not punishment. That being said, after some very cursory research, there may be a legal remedy as there are procedures that must be follow

I wonder if they realized what they were worth and knew slashing them and sending them on to see was enough punishment vs the dreaded letter and loading into the database.  I am having visions of that

I've been able to confirm that it's happening in Miami and Chicago quite a bit.  Check the zip code guide at (https://ribbs.usps.gov/zone_charts/documents/tech_guides/InternationalServiceCenterZoneChartTechnicalGuide.pdf) to see where your packages come through. I just think that the new administration has stepped up federal oversight and a lot of the folks working at these places are now hyper-empowered compared to where it seems like things were heading just a few months ago.

The first instances of it occurring were `10 years ago.  It has never totally gone away but rare.

Sometimes they're just all around grumpy . . .  I had a suitcase cover slashed by Customs about 5 years ago.  It was an expensive leather carryon bag that I never check, and one time I got stuck having to check it.  Pulled out the thin nylon cover for just such situations and zipped the bag into it . . . zipped . . . the cover had a ZIPPER!  Still, the Customs agent on the other end found it more convenient to slash it open, and then tape it closed.

Clearly the USA doesn't give a ****. Nor do they care about collecting any taxes or duties on goods. Count your blessings bro.

I'd suspect the cigars are being cut open to inspect for smuggling of controlled substances and narcotics. Doesn't seem too far fetched to me.

I'd be upset if this happened to me, but it's just the CBP agent doing their job. Sucks, but that's the world we live in. Some of you guys with these cut cigars should get in touch with a home roller. I'd suspect that they could be re-rolled and smoked. Might be fun to see how a new wrapper and binder would change the flavors.

One would think a sniffer dog would be faster than cutting them open

I was feeling pretty righteous and indignant, but the cover was a pretty cheap replacement and they didn't slash the bag underneath, so I got on with life.
