Great post. Only made it as far as the Picasso Museum in Barcelona so I never got to see it in person, though I am well aware of this piece. Very powerful.

Thanks Ken, I took a Western European art class while I "studied abroad" in Spain and the politics / events of the 20th century in the country are fascinating.

Eyjafjallajökull volcano is the responsible for driving me to this masterpiece.

I was about to fly to Prague to a friend´s wedding and one day before departure the volcano went to the news. I could fly from my city to São Paulo but after that there was no prediction when I would reach Europe.

After 2 nights in a hotel, KLM did a great job and accommodated me in a flight to Madrid. During the flight, besides the fact that I was worried about how to reach the wedding, I was sure I would turn this poor situation in a great one and would go to check Guernica for the first time (my mom used to tell me about it and Picasso when I was a kid).

I arrived Madrid and went to the train Main Station to try to find a way to go to Prague.

Well, like many of you know, Reina Sofia is really close to the station.

I was luck enough to find a ticket in the same day to Prague and could spend some time in the museum. Most of the time admiring Guernica.

It was a special day.

Sitting in a dark classroom as your Art History professor describes the pitiful 35 mm slide of this magnificent painting in 1973 and then standing in front of it in 1974 is a life transforming experience. What a masterpiece, what a tragedy..........
