Alaska cruise?

Recommended Posts

Ok, most people go down south when it's cold and come back with a sunburn. We're waiting until it's warm, then going up north to come back with frost bite.

So, anyone done the Alaska cruise? We're on princess (coral princess ).

Any idea what the stick situation is on board? I'm bringing my caddy anyway. Just wondering.

Haven't done princess, but family did the Disney Alaska cruise 2 years ago. Hands down, best experience ever!

Disney was cool with it...had a nice smoking section up on the top deck near the front of the ship. Wasn't a bad place to light one up and enjoy the views...

I haven't used Princess, but I've been on a couple with RCCL. They don't allow smoking at all except on the designated top decks marked for smoking, and they don't allow smoking on the cabin balconies either. On one ship they had a smoking lounge, the other one didn't, but I hear they recently did away with smoking lounges.

If you have a cabin with a balcony, then it will be easier, but not completely care free. The first thing you do when you get onboard is find your cabin maid, and then give him/her a nice tip - $5-$10 or so for every day you'll be on board. This is to keep him/her from turning you in, and to avoid the cruise line charging you the insane $250-$500 cleaning fee for violating the no-smoking policy. After that, your only problem will be your neighbors who may complain if they smell smoke. That happened to me, but again, the maid will help bail you out.

Of course you can smoke when you're not onboard, but I simply can't resist lighting a cigar on the balcony whether we're in port or out at sea.

Enjoy your cruise.

One more thing... they won't have an ashtray in the cabin, so you might want to bring a cheapo with you. I emptied mine into the toilet after ever used and rinsed it out, then I put it in my luggage when I wasn't using it to keep it out of sight.

I'm going on an Alaskan Cruise in May with Norwegian.  I have read that they do have a "smoking lounge". No smoking on balconies. I'm going to bring a bunch of sticks to relax with on the cruise.

It's been a few years since I've been on a ship with a cigar lounge inside. Everything now seems to be on deck. Be prepared for windy weather while on deck. We went in August and there wasn't a day I could smoke due to wind and/or rain. Hope it's better for you. I don't recommend taking up space with an ashtray in your luggage. A plastic cup from the bar filled with ice works great and cleans up easily if you choose to smoke on your balcony if you have one.

Did Alaska last summer on HAL ms Amsterdam, to celebrate Mom’s 80th. Very memorable cruise, amazing sights, and nice to be on a smaller ship (the others in every port were behemoths compared to ours). Had a veranda suite, and at that time they allowed smoking there, but pretty much nowhere else. I’ve heard since then, they’ve ruled even that option out. Seems HAL is not cigar friendly. Had some good sticks on that trip, including my very first CC during our short stop on Vancouver Island. A Cohiba Robusto I shall never forget.
