Unless they are very carefully glued and applied avoiding sticking to the wrapper - and that's highly unlikely to happen, as the same techniques will be applied as for standard bands - that will only introduce additional and unnecessary risks of wrapper damage to the foot. Unless of course you don't bother taking the band off before lighting up...

Well, be bothered.

Can anyone name a double banded stick cheaper than the single banded one?

and, a second band is a second chance to wreck a wrapper and ruin your cigar.

I think it's true that the ring thing was a new invention relative to the history of tobacco smoking. Was considered kinda classless to have em on there.

I'll have to get on the google and see if I can dig up this historical literature.

Epicure No. 2 is cheaper than the D No. 4 and the Romeo Petit Churchill is cheaper than the D No. 5 in my area ;)

IMO one of the extra band(s) purposes is to make the customer feel less cheated and justify the extra price. And I am sure many smokers wouldnt buy a limitada/regional/reserva without the extra band. You know, band smokers.

Well to be far, how would you differentiate (by looks) a Gran Reserva or Reserva from it's normal production counterpart?

Good point, and exactly this is why I am not overly happy with the fact that in particular in the Rs and GRs the bands are almost never sticking (glued) to the wrapper.... ;)
