guilow Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I'm in need of another box of large format cigars. I like to keep them on hand for long sit-downs with friends. For the life of me, I can't make up my mind on which one to get. Partagas is my favorite marca so I'm leaning that way. But I recently read that the Lusi has gone "down hill" over last couple of years. Can anyone else confirm this? I smoked a couple of RAGs a short while back that were GREAT. I have yet to smoke a Lusi. Help! Please give me your subjective opinions!
Mel Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Well let's just start by saying you won't go wrong with either of these. I have been a big RAG fan since my first one. Rob had some nice 02 models and I was amazed that he still had cigars of that year class. He stated that not everyone enjoyed the RAG. I was astounded! Who would not like these big flavorful monsters? A year latter I bought a whole cab of the P Lusi. Smooth beautiful devils. More med. bodied than the RAG but of so refined. Do not forget the Saint Louis Rey DC if you can find them, but let's not make this even more difficult. Choice is simple. If you like the more bold and fruity then go RAG, but if the smooth and mellow is more to your liking then go out with a Lusi. I would wish you luck mate but you do not need it here, there is no wrong chioce.
Loki Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I recently, last week, smoked one of each of these sticks. The RAG was gifted by a friend (03) and was great. It burned and drew well. The Lusi(04) was also wonderful as I like yourself am a huge fan of just about anything Partagas. I was torn but after reading your post. I would have to go with the Rag over the Lusi. Now the late 90's Lusi that I smoked on New Years Eve was phenominal. Too bad I only have a handfull left.:-( I also don't want to make it worse on you but I love the HDM DC.
smk819 Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I have to jump on the RAG bandwagon, much bolder and more flavorful than the Luci IMHO.;-)

Hell, Mel, I think the SLRDC is swell! Why not make it difficult? You take all the fun out of life! What a wonderful choice between RAG and Lusi, though. Can't go wrong with either one.
guilow Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 » Do not forget the Saint Louis Rey DC if you can find them I thought about those too. I am a big SLR fan. I love the Regios and Serie A. But the DCs only come in boxes of 50s, right? I don't want to commit to that many.

jjisaacson Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 lusi... like the rag too... but the lusi just fits the bill for a celebratory special smoke.... especially with a few years on them...
DocRKS Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 » lusi... » » like the rag too... but the lusi just fits the bill for a celebratory » special smoke.... especially with a few years on them... Smoking a Lusitania is something I look forward to and I always save these cigars for a moment when I have the time to really ENJOY and savor the cigar - just had one a few nights ago paired with the 16 year old Bushmills Single Malt Irish Whiskey ---- life indeed is good and this cigar always helps me to remember that fact...
Ken Gargett Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 really like them both but a good slr dc tops all. my preference is marginally for the lusi. they age magnificently, if you can keep your hands off them and i find them just a bit more refined than the rag. as for going off lately, when i was in havana last year, one of my roller mates was emphatic that the lusi's they were doing at the time were some of the very best cigars in all havana and i think he was right. also, if you have not, as you suggest, smoked a lusi then i'd be inclined to get one or two where-ever you can and try them to get an idea. no sense in buying a heap if they are not your thing. but the question really is a bit like, 'which supermodel do you want to sleep with'.

Mikey Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 I'm in the minority, but I'd take a RAG over a Lusi anytime.I just like 'em better....a tad bolder and richer, imo. not sure if anyone mentioned the Punch DC's,but I think they are fantastic cigars in their own right. A little more confusion never hurt...:-D

Now I have to choose from RAG, Lusi, Punch DC, SLR DC!!! This thread is turning into a DC listing.
Mel Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Remember RAG- bold full and in your face Lusi- mild refined, cultured SLRDC-rare smooth and perfect construction HDM-more mild and easy Punch-I forgot need to smoke one soon. Hope you got my message, call Rob about the cigars I mentioned. Mel.
Van55 Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 Ramon Allones Gigantes for sure! Not to confuse things in your mind, but have you considered SCdH El Morro?

guilow Posted January 9, 2006 Author Posted January 9, 2006 » Not to confuse things in your mind, but have you considered SCdH El Morro? Thus far, I'm not a fan of that Marca. But I haven't written it off.
Tampa1257 Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 All I can say is that I really enjoy both the RAG and the Lusi. May I have both Please!
jay8354 Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 » » RAG- bold full and in your face » Lusi- mild refined, cultured » SLRDC-rare smooth and perfect construction » HDM-more mild and easy » Punch-I forgot need to smoke one soon. » Outta of the ones Mel suggested, I would recommend the SLR DC, RAG. Haven't tried a Lusi yet, so can't comment on them. I find the HDM and Punch to not be in the same class as the rest. Though given the choice of just either RAG and Lusi...., hard to comment on something I haven't tried. From what others have said, mmm... I would have to go for the Lusi for being more balanced. Best bet, ask Rob what is great now between the 2.
Shooter Posted January 10, 2006 Posted January 10, 2006 TOUGH CALL! The Lusitania's I've had from dress-boxes never rocked-my-boat. Then I splurged for a cab of fifty ('02's) and saw what all the fuss was about! One of my favorites for sure. That said---I adore the RAG and would heartily recommend them too. Had some from '01 that were ho-hum at best but the '04's I've got are awesome. Between Lusi and RAG-- I don't find one stronger than another-personally. What WAS also said that I can concur with is that the Punch DC is the best out there! Probably the best DC I've smoked---period. Even over the legendary SLR DC. Now got get yourself a sampler and be done with it! LOL:-P
guilow Posted January 10, 2006 Author Posted January 10, 2006 » Now got get yourself a sampler and be done with it! LOL:-P I think that's what I'm going to have to do. No clear consensus so they both most be great. I'm just going to have to try a few of each and judge for myself!
