H. Upmann EL 2009 Magnum 48 Review: Gnarly Cigar Review Competition

This cigar was given to me by a friend. I think the foot got knocked around in my humidor while looking for something to smoke and got a little beat up, also a nice water spot right below the EL 2009 band. I unfortunately do not know the box code of this particular cigar as it was a gift.

Writing this review is a little outside my comfort zone. I have never done a review before but saw this as a fun challenge to see how my palate is developing over this first year of smoking cigars. Bear with me as I try my best for all of you to write a decent review!

 

Light time 11:48pm

Thunderstorms 72 degrees, 93% humidity.

Pairing with water

Guillotine straight cut.

 

Initial Light: Slight pepper on the finish that last about 30 seconds on the back of the throat. Cedar, Chocolate, with a slightly loose draw. Draw isn’t bad, but a little loose to my preference.

1/3: Cedar, cream, pepper on the finish, Cuban twang, slight vanilla, sweet, chocolate. Just at a medium body

2/3: Chocolate and cedar are the dominate flavors to me. Sweetness picks up a bit and the twang is just perfect. Pepper still there.  Draw seemed to firm up a bit which is a positive. Body is at a solid medium now. Turning out to be a really enjoyable smoke.

3/3: Cigar is starting to get a little hot at the beginning of the last third. I don’t think I am smoking it too quickly. Strength still at a nice medium. Cream is starting to fade a bit along with the sweetness and the strong chocolate. Twang and cedar still there. Nice rich toasted tobacco flavors ramping up. A few touch ups were required in this last third.

End time: 12:44am

Total smoke time: 56 Minutes

I really enjoyed this cigar and would smoke one again any time. Sadly, this was my only one of these.

I've never heard a bad word about a Magnum 48, and apparently even a beater smokes well! Nice write-up. I like the mood of a thunderstorm late at nice, nice touch.

The Upmann Mag 48 is one of my favorite smokes. Nice review.

The draw developed into a perfect draw after about 1/2 of the first third. Guess I got lucky on the one and only!

Well done. Hadn't smoked one of these myself for awhile but picked one up last week and quite enjoyed it.

Your review was spot on to my experience though I didn't pick up the heat, mine lasted closer to 75 minutes though.
