Fosgate Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Found that on a blog and found this. http://nbcpolitics.org/obama-give-17-billion-cuba-apology/ I about fell out of my chair. Anyone know if there is any truth to this?
NSXCIGAR Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 At first I thought this was an Onion article. NBC news, incredible. As soon as Cuba gives back all the property they seized, release their political prisoners and apologize for that first, I'd send them the money.

Well, aren't you indirectly sending them money already? 1

I'd rather the US--or anyone, really--give the money as outright charity rather than as an act of apology for what really was a response to a more heinous act. Not saying the embargo was an appropriate and/or effective response, but the intentions behind it were justified. A real apology would be lifting the stupid thing.
El Presidente Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 so the US counters for 117 Billion. in the end they agree to leave it there and all square. Everyones a winner bar the poor sods who lost everything. I love political accounting
danny Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 I HIGHLY doubt that a legitimate NBC news article would be on a ".org" site and also make a comparisons about another "organization" to an over-the-counter laxative in their journalistic piece.... Poor journalism. Poor attempt at humor. That's a Stephen Curry, Game 6, type of move right there. 2

You must be right--this appears to be some blog-type compilation site not sanctioned by NBC in any way. Highly suspicious. I knew it sounded too much like the Onion...
Fugu Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Jeebus people - be careful with the "internet" The last para sais it all... (apart from the plain idiotic content). This is an agitation site. Check out under "conspiracy theory"
wabashcr Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 I can't speak to the source of this piece, but it is true that Cuba has demanded an amount in that ballpark for reparations for damages suffered under the embargo. They have a judgment from a Cuban court and everything. It's clearly a negotiating position to counter the US property seizure claims. Here's an article from the NY Times that explains it: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/12/14/world/americas/talks-begin-in-cuba-on-confiscated-us-property-worth-billions.html 1
Fugu Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 OK, fantastic... but true obviously (still, site's not). Thanks for the additional info, Chris! Such a counter claim - a "reparation" for embargo - would be quite something new in international law (well, a progressive approach by the Cuban govt ). But seems such move is the only card that Cuba thinks it could play here. As phantasmal as it may seem legally, it will have to be dealt with politically. 1
Orion21 Posted June 17, 2016 Posted June 17, 2016 Considering we signed a fools agreement with Iran, which gave them access to approx $250,000,000,000 I wouldn't put anything past us to sign an agreement to hand over a few billion more for Cuba. 3
semifan1 Posted June 18, 2016 Posted June 18, 2016 No need to send them money, once the US lifts the embargo the floodgates of money will start rolling in from the US in tourism and corporations. I know living in FT Lauderdale I will be going once I leave the middle East.
