The First Toronto Mega-herf I attended - I think it was Megaherf 2.

What made it the best? It had the perfect ratio of planned:unplanned space. There was speeches, events, raffles, meal, etc - but there was also lots of time throughout the program for just meeting people, talking, smoking, drinking, etc. If it's too much speeches and direction, folks can lose interest fast. To have an enjoyable experience, there has to be open-format time throughout to allow folks to interact without regular interruption.

Also - keeping Keith from getting "Keithed" is always a good bellweather for success! lmao.gif

And to answer the question:

Live jazz is good. Also a proper fireplace. Rooftops are great as well. I could go black tie or party casual, either is just as fun. A proper sit down is only necessary for the dinner portion, otherwise a comfortable lounging space is key, that and appropriate bar/wait staff circulating.

i appreciate that there are many different musical tastes on this forum but live jazz. only if you are serving sauv blanc and monte C's. or grandin.

and as someone who has spent far too much time in a penguin suit, i'd be inclined to duck that as well.

unless of course you have squillion dollar ashtrays that are not to be used.

What makes a great function? Simple. The people.

You could have the best catering, a fantastic location with a beautiful view, plenty of space with tables and chairs for people to stand or lounge around, great staff to serve and take care of your guests, but all of that can be wasted if the people attending are a bunch of tossers.

Conversely, you can have a simple location with some nice food, but the attendees go the extra mile to make everyone else feel welcomed.

Now if you could bottle this, Rob, you'd have the perfect recipe for any cigar function:

The only downside to cigar babes is that you tend to blindly accept whatever they have on offer . . . rather than the cigar you actually wanted . . .
