LukeC Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Hey FoH fam! I've been smoking cigars for about 6 months now and I've had those moments where my tongue just feels worn out. Recently, (past 2 weeks) I've been having a smoke every other day to every day and I have this weird numb/bitter/metallic taste around the tip and edge of my tongue. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, what did you do about it? Rest? Rinse? Drink tea and honey? Cheers all!
stogieluver Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Sounds to me like you're smoking too many non Cuban cigars. It's amazing to me how NC's make my mouth taste like crap, and CC's don't have any aftertaste at all. If you're smoking CC's exclusively, then I don't know why you'd be having this issue. What do you drink while smoking? 2
LLumley Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Yea, would have to wonder exactly what you are smoking and what do you drink while you smoke? 1
LukeC Posted April 18, 2016 Author Posted April 18, 2016 Honestly, I haven't had any CC's yet. Waiting for my first shipments to arrive. My plan however is to stick to only CC's though from here on out. While I smoke I usually only drink water. I like to have a clean palate while I smoke so I can discern all of the flavors.
PapaDisco Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 When I'm on the road for a week I'll have 3-5 cigars/day. Exclusively Cuban. I've never yet experienced a dulling of the palate or the metallic twist that you mention. Now, in between travel weeks I'll slow down to 4 cigars/week; so maybe that makes a difference. 1
LLumley Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 I usually have a cigar a day, non cuban. I do switch up what I smoke from day to day... I try to avoid smoking full flavor after full flavor... ill try to mix it up with something light in between, maybe that makes a difference? For me, I MUST have a root beer, cream soda or cherry pepsi when I smoke... 2

LukeC Posted April 18, 2016 Author Posted April 18, 2016 What NC cigars are you smoking? I stick to Oliva, Rocky, Gurkha, Drew Estate
Easttide Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Only time my palate has been way off was when I was getting sick, sick or getting over being sick!
LukeC Posted April 18, 2016 Author Posted April 18, 2016 Honestly, Im wondering if I burned it from coffee and with smoking cigars so often, that it's not healing
Popular Post MIKA27 Posted April 18, 2016 Popular Post Posted April 18, 2016 I stick to Oliva, Rocky, Gurkha, Drew Estate Sounds like Gurkha-itis to me 11
LukeC Posted April 18, 2016 Author Posted April 18, 2016 Most Gurkhas are crap. There are a few gems though
MooseAMuffin Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 I smoke NCs, because I'm new to CCs, and if you scorch them when first lighting it ruins the whole cigar. Also if you smoke too fast they get bitter. Just what I've learned anyway. 1
Anthonyjoseph89 Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Honestly, Im wondering if I burned it from coffee and with smoking cigars so often, that it's not healingI dunno everyone is different. If i smoke a lot my nose gets burned out and it smells like metal and I can taste it in my mouth. Kind of like that taste and smell you get when you try and catch something with your face and crack your nose. I find taking a few days rest helps.....your mentioned cigars might not be helping either, just my opinion. Sent from my SM-G928V using Tapatalk 1
zeedubbya Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Pipe smokers have the term tongue bite for when you get the sensation you're speaking of. I've noticed NC or CC if I smoke a lot of Pyramid/torpedos/belicosos--Cigars with concentrated smoke I'll sometimes get a numb and sore tongue. But let's lay the cards on the table and face the facts. We're flooding one of the most sensitive areas of our body with smoke from a huge pile of leaves which contains a highly poisonous compound. I thoroughly enjoy doing so, and I also chew smokeless tobacco nearly daily. As a consenting participant I am aware there may be some individualized negative side effects which may pop up on occasion. Not trying to sound too negative, but if I touch a hot stove and it burns me do I blame the stove for being hot? Your tongue will likely be ok, rinse with some salt water (hey it's what my dentist always says to do) and take a short break until your CCs arrive. Enjoy the experience!! Life is too short to not enjoy it. 3

Fugu Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 One of the most striking conversations recently... Blazer Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 I think it might be the brands you are smoking. I smoke 98% NC, mostly boutiques, and I have never had this problem.
Crash712us Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 My palette gets burned out only when smoke Nicaraguans. I enjoy the Davidoffs a lot, if smoke more than one every once in while. It will kill my tasted buds for weeks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
wabashcr Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Check for tar on the head of your cigars as you smoke them. I occasionally get some tar when I smoke (especially with NCs), which requires re-cutting. If you get even the smallest amount of it on your tongue, it will completely ruin your palate, sometimes for a day or two. Usually you can see it seep through to the top of the head, but it can sometimes be hard to spot, especially with darker blends. I periodically wipe a finger or thumb across the head to ensure I don't ever get it on my tongue. Regardless of what the particular issue may be, it's never a bad idea to rest your palate for a few days. It's tough to abstain when the weather is nice and you have some free time. But I definitely find I enjoy the experience more if I pull back from time to time.

Life is too short to not enjoy it. Zeedubb has nailed it, what you have my friend is what they call "Tongue Bite" & it's a *****. Usually comes from pipes, but it can happen with NC's as well. I have not experienced it with CCs yet....so not sure if it's just NCs or not. Anyway, I have experienced this one time, it was last month during my birthday herf, I was smoking a Tatuaje 10th anniversary belicoso I belive, anyway it hurt so bad. I had to stop smoking for 4 days after that. My tongue had a bright red tip, and it really messed with my flavors and whatnot......so your best bet is to take a break from smoking and let it heal....it will. 1

You will appreciate a cigar more and give your palate a chance to cleanse itself. 1
