It's a sad day for football. Johan Cruyff passed away today. He was 68 years old.

Devastated. In my view the greatest dutchman of the 20th century. Should not underestimate his influence on dutch society/consciousness, let alone world football. REST IN PEACE JOHAN

This is so very sad. An incredible player, coach, innovator and ambassador of the beautiful game. We've lost one of the great ones and way too early.

Sometimes, I wish we could have 'Total Football' in the modern game...I guess the game is too fast and professionalised to pull it off doing it week-in, week-out. I still marvel at what Hungary in the 50's and Ajax, as a club (and the Netherlands) were able to do with their exciting brand of football in the 70's. Still we have the memories...Johan Cruyff, Rest In Peace.

Sad indeed - a testament to Johan as a man and as a player is that his legend far exceeds those that had to pleasure to witness him play.

In regards to "total football", I think it is less a factor of the speed of the game or the professional aspects of the leagues, but more a cause of a lack of talent/ability of players to play out of their natural position. Even in the heyday of that Agent Orange team or of the total football style of play, not everyone/team could pull it off.

In this day and age, players are trained and developed to be more focused and specialized. That is what kills "total football" today. You have very highly skilled players in todays game, but most of them can only play 1-2 positions at best.

Sad moment for world football. Very sad. RIP Johan and thank you for living a meaningful life.

It is a tragedy (in football terms) that the 74 Dutch team and for that matter, the 82 Brasil team did not win the World Cup.

Barcelona attribute their modern day success and style directly to Cruyff. This is the modern day total football.

I would argue that the 2009-2011 Barca teams were a better representation of "modern day total football" then the team and style that they play currently. That being said, I agree...closest thing in the modern game.

Adding weight to your statement about Guardiola's Barca is that Guardiola himself was coached by Cruyff, making his version of total football even closer to the great Dutchman's.
