Ken Gargett
thought i'd toss in a query for the cricket fans - What did Shiv Chanderpaul, Denis Compton, Garry Sobers, Imran Khan, Mohammad Yousuf and Brian Lara all have in common? a clue? i could add another good player to this list. JohnS
I could only think, off the top of my head, that it took these players awhile to score their first century, but when they did it was significant (for some). Maybe not so for Denis Compton, but Bobby Simpson also took awhile to breakthrough with 311 at Manchester in 1964.
Bill Hayes
Just having a stab but all perhaps started as all rounders. The other player being - Steve Smith? Or maybe swapped key disciplines?

Or maybe swapped key disciplines? bill, no, but interesting guess. i should say that it is not some weird unguessable thing at all. and a further clue, the other good player was bradman. and i make no claims that this is the exclusive list of players who achieved this but some of the notable ones. dicko
triple centurions?? although that full list would be a fair bit longer...

Steve Waugh would be in that list too. 19 odd tests something like that? imagine that these days you get a couple of games, maybe a series, and you are out if you don't score big
Ken Gargett
triple centurions?? although that full list would be a fair bit longer... dicko, i am not suggesting that the list is exclusive - just that all of those named have something in common (and there could be others). not triple centurions. nice guess - i could be wrong but i have khan with a top score of may be 140 ish? another clue - brendon mccullum failed to join this list. Ken Gargett
mind you, i suppose anyone playing only the one innings for a duck would also qualify. i see the west indian who played just one test and averaged 112 from his one innings v the poms died at 95 this week. as for symmo, not a genius but might be the best fieldsman i've ever seen (maybe mark waugh). and could bat on occasion. went up to toowoomba many years ago with the family to watch qld v poms on a tour game. he scored a brilliant century (might have been his first for qld). flogged them. was so far ahead of the pack that day. sadly, not consistent. best innings for australia had to be the one day world cup knock in south africa on the day warnie sent home for drugs. against pakistan or the safricans. can't recall. JohnS
If I recall, Ponting insisted that Symonds be included in the World Cup squad in 2003, as Symonds was down to his last chance. Prior to that match-winning innings against Pakistan when Australia were 4 for not-many, Symonds had done nothing in one-day cricket, the thought he could hit 140-odd at No.6 in those circumstances gave him the confidence to eventually become a great player in that format.
