someone at our discussion table actually said recently that a prospective employer seeking applicants for a job would view an applicant negatively if they had no Facebook presence.

Depends on the Job. I could see that to be true if they were working for a SEO or Social Media/Marketing company. However, that all changes if they were applying for the CIA, MI6 or KGB:)
