dangolf18 Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 I have the chance to pick a bottle up for around $100. What does this usually go for? Worth picking up a bottle? Thanks.
sengjc Posted September 16, 2015 Posted September 16, 2015 I have the chance to pick a bottle up for around $100. What does this usually go for? Worth picking up a bottle? Thanks. Lots of money, I think. People pay a lot for aged whiskey, even more so if they are from cult brands like this one. Lucky find.
TM-US Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 If you're talking about the current, Indiana rye, IMO pass. Smooth Ambler cask strength rye is virtually the same product and half the price. $50. You have to like the signature LDI taste, though- herbal and minty notes galore. If you're talking about older, Kentucky rye, then definitely buy. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
Nrengle Posted September 17, 2015 Posted September 17, 2015 Willet was only aging onsite till about 2012. That's when they started distilling again. So your call. I've had some of their aged stuff and it's fine. Not the best, not the worst. Im not one to pay high prices just for the sake of the name. If I like it maybe but $100 would be the absolute top. But honestly I think that's about how much it is in the gift shop right now too.
fokker4me Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 Ill 2nd the Smooth Ambler vote. They do pretty much the the exact same thing as Willett which is buy LDI/MGPI Rye and bottle it as CS. I don't much care for The minty and pickle brine taste of LDI but to each their own. Try to find Pikesville 6yr 110 proof KY rye from Heaven Hill. That's a more traditional rye then LDIs 95/5 Mash bill without any corn.
ThePolskiOgorki Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Probably a little late to the party here but my understanding is that Willet doesn't sell whiskey that has been distilled in their distillery at the present. They are slapping a label on hooch aged and made by other distillers they have purchased and blended to a specific flavor profile. As already mentioned they have once again started to age their own product but we wont see it for a few years still. I think that $100 is mighty steep given that there are so many more affordable options out there sold by the people who actually distill it. Expensive doesn't always make something better. I think it does just the opposite.
Phinz Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 I'm a big fan of the 2yr Willet rye... Huge rye flavor, cask strength, actual Willet product, low enough price to use in a Manhatten, etc... My vote: skip the aged "Willet" and buy two or three of the 2yr Willet rye.
