just came across this - only one form of alcohol was allowed to be imported into the united states during prohibition.

and that was laphroaig malt whisky.

the reason was that it was so high in iodine content that it became "medicinal".

There was plenty of legal alcohol during prohibition. Wine for religious institutions, medicinal alcohol, alcohol using in manufacturing. People were even allowed brewing and creating their own wine and beer.

Reminds me of that one TreeHouse of Horror episode where Bart has to sit beside Üter and partake in his candy, Joy Joys, that contains "Mit Iodine!"

shlomo, understand that. the reference i saw was to imported alcohol. no idea if correct but if it is, thought it an interesting fact.

It is published in Laphroaig history too, I suppose there is some truth in it?
