Portugal is making the some of the best wines at that price point. Dao and Douro regions are my two favorites. A bench mark wine from the Douro that well made for that price point is "Altano". Crafted by the Synmington family which ones many great port wine houses like Dow, Grahams, and Warres. The 2004 is drinking quite well.
BMWBen Posted October 23, 2016 Posted October 23, 2016 Not quite a cheap and cheerful but I had a 2012 Duckhorn Merlot with dinner tonight that was great
Blazer Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Ferarri-Carano Sienna red wine. Delish for $15.99.

SloppyJ Posted October 24, 2016 Posted October 24, 2016 Not a wine drinker but a girl I used to date loved Menage A Trois. It was a decently sweet wine and I thought it tasted okay.

Good to know, I'm still very new to wine and trying things out. I actually picked up the port you had recommended a few posts up as I've never tried a port before.

Good to know, thanks for the Info Ken anytime. you certainly have a good bottle - love douro reds from good producers but we don't see a lot of them. give some of the ports a go s well. but have them post dinner with a cigar - port works much better than red wines, for me.

The thing I like about this wine is that it is great to drink right away with flavors of young red fruit, like strawberries and raspberries. However after 3-4 years those red flavors turn dark and the flavors lean toward black cherry and blackberries. Good either way.
BrightonCorgi Posted October 25, 2016 Posted October 25, 2016 Yes, Altano is a red wine, not port, but made from the same grapes. Altano makes a fabulous white wine for the money, but not imported to the States. I have had at their Quinta (Vesuvio) in the Douro. After drinking this Altano, which should breathe for at least a couple of hours, if you want something richer; go for the Ramos Pinto Duas Quinta. They are also a famous port producer. Niepoort makes some elegant fresh wines at different price points. They excel on the more expensive ones. Their Coche white wine I consider to be one of the best dry wines (red or white) in the whole Douro region. Utterly incredible stuff. 1
BMWBen Posted October 25, 2016 Posted October 25, 2016 I thought I had posted this one before but I guess not. Goes great with lamb and is only ~$12
BMWBen Posted October 30, 2016 Posted October 30, 2016 Some more new stuff to try out. Just the labels as I pulled them from my vivino app, but all had decent ratings.
Blazer Posted October 31, 2016 Posted October 31, 2016 Had this wine Friday night on a recommendation from a store owner and it was fantastic for $13.95. Went back Saturday and bought 6 more. .

Teq43 Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 If you like bila haut, you should try wine from Castelmaure in AOP Corbieres, very good price value too
Blazer Posted November 27, 2016 Posted November 27, 2016 Intrinsic Cabernet Sauvignon. Fantastic cabernet from WA for less than $20.
Blazer Posted December 5, 2016 Posted December 5, 2016 Wine Spectator just announced their Top 100 Wines of the year and there are quite a few reds under $20. http://top100.winespectator.com/lists/
BMWBen Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Some new stuff to try, one mentioned earlier in this thread. Also a question about this one.. How come a 10 year old wine is priced so cheap ($24.99) ? Is it any good?

The short answer is that older does not always equate to better. I'm a big fan of Cru Beaujolais, and Lynch imports. I've not had this one, and if anything my first thought would be that it might be past it...
BrightonCorgi Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 You should be digging the Fluerie... Cru Beaujolais is a 10 year wine, after that it comes down to vintage and producer, but they'll be at a plateau at that mark.
Blazer Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 Had this wine this weekend and it was fantastic for $17.98. Its a bit of a teeth stainer so maybe not the best first date wine, but really tasty.
potpest Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 Tried this the other night, thought it was excellent for the money
