Partagas SD #3 EL

Bought this as a single to smoke yesterday. It did absolutely nothing for me. It had a thick dark wrapper, which meant that the burn tunelled a fair bit, so I was constantly having to correct the burn. It produced a fair amount of smoke, but this was very hot and harsh making it very unpleasant to smoke. I bailed on it halfway. Very disappointing.

I've only had a few but I was not impressed at all either. Some folks would give their left......er, would give their right arm for more of these. I'll keep both thank you!

I've smoked two boxes all EMS that have been fantastic, the wrapper is not as dark and thinner on these than my non EMS. The non EMS are good-great but the EMS were fanfreackintastic. All have the same code ARA ABR 02 and I hope the thicker wrappers will improve with time, may have to try one soon.

thanks for your input regarding the lighter EMS wrappers. Your experience supports the contention of many that the dark EL wrappers have been problematic, especially in terms of burn, but also tend to impart a more bitter flavor. The half dozen or so #3's that I smoked two years ago were not that impressive, but they were very young. I like the #1 EL more.

I hope that some who are more experienced with this cigar, and have smoked the darker wrappers more recently will add their wisdom to the mix.

Just my humble opinion,

The PSD3 EL was actually the last EL that I purchased full boxes of. At the time, I kind of enjoyed the different EL taste, and burnt threw 2.5 boxes in about six months. The remains of which have been sleeping deep in the humidor now for over 2 years.

This past week end, I pulled out several ELs to smoke on my birthday, one of which was the PSD3 EL. The cigar burned very nice, but the flavors could have been the same as any other EL that has ever been produced. Rich deep roasted coffee and sort of burnt mocha flavors. The smoke volume was good, but the flavors of the Cohiba DC EL or the PSD2 EL that I smoked the same day were exactly the same as the PSD3 EL. They all tasted the same, there was no difference between a Partagas and a Cohiba, the cigars all tasted like ELs, not any particular marca.

Now granted to me each of the cigars were nice, and all had been sleeping in the humidor for enough time to be at their peak, but I reaffirmed that while they were interesting cigars, I much prefer the complexity and flavors of regular production Habanos

Sorry to hear of your poor experience with these..While I have not had one that has left me as let down as the one you smoked did for you - these are sort of just "ok" for me --not bad but nothing to write home about yet either..... Considering the premium $$$ associated with these ELs, I have received a much greater bang for the buck with many 'regular' production cigars..... I'm just letting these ELs continue to rest deep down in the Humi......

Chuck, I agree with you in principle, especially regarding your last statement expressing preference for the complexity and flavors of the regular production. For example, I like the new Partagas P2 more than any Party EL ever produced.

However, I can't agree that they ALL taste identical. I enjoy an occasional Hoyo Piramide EL or Romeo Hermosos #2. THEY don't taste at all like you describe, even though other DO.

Chuck that is interesting. I happen to think that the D3 is the most like the regular production partagas vitolas than any other EL is to their respective brand. I haven't had one in a while but I do have boxes sleeping. I'm going to wait a bit longer before I try another.

I'd hate to be disappointed.

I got it from Havana House, which is is the Westin hotel in Martin Place. They have a bunch of old EL's and special releases like the D4 Reservas, Monte/Cuaba/Cohiba millenium jars, Cohiba Selection Reserve, and a few others whose names I can't remember at the moment.

Overhumidification has something to do with it - the humidity the other day was at 82% (why, I don't know, perhaps for shipping or something?) though I clipped the cap and let it dry out for about 3 hours before smoking, so it wasn't as wet as it was.

Picked one out a box pass recently, letting it sit a spell. Hope it one of the good ones, can't imagine a Partigas bring that bad.
