JohnS
I thought I would kick things off by posting this review. It is my first extensive review of a cigar. Hopefully by starting things off I will inspire you to do the same. The cigar I chose today was a Montecristo No.5. I do not have the box code because it came from El Pres in a petit corona sampler, but I am 99.9% certain it is 2014. The Montecristo No.5 is considered an iconic petit corona cigar, a perla at 102mm (or 4 inches) by 40 ring gauge. An average cigar smoker should smoke this vitola in around 30 minutes. This cigar had a nice sheen to the wrapper. The punch cut gave me no issues, so it signalled to me that it would be okay to smoke. I used my trusted 4-jet Regal lighter to light this up, being careful not to char the wrapper. The burn was slightly uneven to begin with so I evened it up. My initial tasting was surprisingly spicy, I was surprised to taste this in a Montecristo cigar. As usual, for me, I found myself smoking this too quickly as I was enjoying the strong spice and espresso flavours, not to mention the large volume of smoke with each puff. I decided to make myself slow down and allow the burn to even out. As I got towards the end of the first third, and started to begin the second third, I noticed the nutty flavours come out of this. The cigar became milder, but still produced a large volume of smoke with each puff. At this point I really slowed down and this is when I really enjoyed it. I found that the ash was very consistent all the way through. The nutty flavour was dominant. At the point that I took the famous Montecristo band off, the final third was still cool, but the volume of smoke now tapered off. Flavours of cocoa, which came through the second third took over. I had no issue with smoking it to the nub. As you can see, the ash remained to the very end. The main difference between this Montecristo cigar and other Montecristo marcas that I've savoured (No.1, No.2 and No.4's) was that it was not as creamy as I was expecting, yet the nutty, cocoa flavours made up for that. Overall, the cigar took me 45 minutes to smoke, which for me is quite significant as those of you who know me and have smoked with me know how fast I can smoke a cigar when I am enjoying it! I hope you've enjoyed my review.

JohnS
Very nice review. You may need to be added to the Rob and Ken show. And btw, nice punch, what size is it. Ha! If that was to happen I'd think I'd shave my head and play Curly, Rob could be Larry (he's always happy, El Pres!) and Ken would be the perfect Moe. They could call us the Three Stogies! Thanks everyone for the encouraging acclaim. The punch cut was an 8mm size cut, or approximately 5/16 of an inch.
