CoCigarSmoker Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Alright gents, hello again. This stretch of weather has given me the ability to hit the deck with a cigar far more often then I normally would be able to get away with this time of year. So today, I found myself with a couple hours to spare and thought I would dip into my first cigar from Hoyo De Monterrey. Now normally I bring the laptop out and transcribe notes as I smoke but today I just didn't feel like it. So with that being said I imagine this review will be a bit shorter as I'm trying to recall this from earlier today. Still, about 3/4 of the way through this smoke I looked at a couple other reviews of this same cigar because there was something I just couldn't put words to flavor wise that I was tasting and I must say, I COMPLETELY agree with just about every review that I read. Construction Upon looking at this cigar the size, wrapper, double bands, and overall display grab your attention. Again, the wrapper isn't what I would call extremely oily or dark, but it was a nice deep shade of reddish brown and felt almost velvety to the touch. The cap was triple done as usual. The cigar didn't appear to have any soft spots, but it wasn't as firm to the touch as I was expecting. Pre-light The draw on the cigar was just a tad loose but honestly, after my recent plugged RJ Churchill the looseness was a welcome experience. The draw was loose but definitely not terrible. Cold draw brings forward notes of toasted tobacco, light notes of earth and coffee with just a hair of spice. There was a very beautiful ending note that stayed on my tongue during the cold draw and eventually carried on to the rest of the cigar that I couldn't for the life of me figure out. Eventually about 2/3 into the cigar I finally gave in and found some reviews online that I looked through......Graham Cracker!!!!!! That was the flavor and man was it enjoyable, just the right amount of subdued honey and graham cracker. 1/3 The cigar started with a punch and I don't mean this in a bad way. There were big notes of spicy barnyard, deep earthy leather, and tobacco tobacco tobacco. And then all at once the flavors are muted and finished with smooth creamy graham cracker. The volume of smoke was huge and wonderful. The loose draw did distract me slightly, but man oh man what a great cigar. The ash held on pretty tightly and the only other construction issue of note was a slight uneven burn that carried out the whole way. 2/3 The second third wasn't as flavorful or flavor forward as the 1/3 but it held onto the barnyard, that "hoyo twang", and the graham cracker finish....they were just slightly more muted. The ash didn't fall off until about midway into the 2/3. It seemed like once the ash fell for the first time that burn issues really got magnified. 3/3 The last third showed a uptick in the flavors again. The flavor profile in this cigar never changed once, it was just a matter of how intense the flavors were with each draw. The last third did start to burn a little hot and I wasn't able to nub this particular cigar. The burn continued to require multiple corrections and went out twice during this third. Overall and Take away I really enjoyed this flavor profile of this cigar, I loved the vitola, and man it had great potential. Sure, there were some construction issues with the cigar but I'd love to get some more of these cigars. Great Barnyard, earth, spice, and a sweet graham cracker finish. I loved this cigar so much I hate even mentioning the draw/construction issues, but I'd feel remiss if I withheld anything. That being said I don't want to give anyone the impression that this wasn't a great cigar. I'd love to get a box of these and really want to try the other Epicure Numbers as well as the rest of HDM! Hopefully these will pop up in the 24:24 sometime soon as I really enjoyed Hoyo De Monterrey, sans construction issues of course. Cheers, Seth 3
JohnS Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Yes, thanks again for the review. Graham cracker....like sweetened with honey?
CoCigarSmoker Posted March 26, 2015 Author Posted March 26, 2015 Yes, thanks again for the review. Graham cracker....like sweetened with honey? Not that sweet more mild and warm with just enough honey to cleanse the palate. Very enjoyable profile and something I've never tasted before. Seth
SmittyinAZ Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Nice rvw Seth. Jealous you are getting nice weather. Love this Marca.

Aedan382 Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 I found these on my vacation to Aruba, and bought a couple. I thought that my "beach" memory might have made this overblown in my memory, but the second one I had was even better. Man, I'm hooked. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 1
