How do you determine the quality of foil wrapped cigars like RyJ Cazzies? With cigars that only comes in tubes do you have to open up every stinking one of them to check for quality?

Don't check them as a rule. That is why you don't see them come up on 24;24 unless as a special and I will put "not inspected"

I hope all of you are well and I look forward to getting back tomorrow! I was asked earlier in the week to take some photo's of what is rejected when I go through a case of cigars. I think these

keep in mind that the cigar trade is one of these business where most retailers have less knowledge of the product than many of their customers. You can hear stupidities of the same ilk everywhere…

I haven't time to go into it now but I promise to try over the weekend. In short form: "It is nothing" ....it only constitutes say 3-5% of a cigar. "it is everything"...a pinch of Saffron adds

There are very few cigars that come ONLY in tube. Only one comes to mind: the Montecristo Tubos. Add to this that checking them would mean checking all the cigars, as a box of tubos can come with 25 different wrapper's hues.

Trinidad Reyes

Trinidad Coloniales

Trinidad Fundearlierr?&J Short Churchil

Cohiba Maduro 5 Series

Sad to see Trinidad with no love these days. I love some good reyes. Has this poorer quality begun in 2014? Or earlier Rob ?

Could you pick tubes and wrapped cigars based on their box codes? As you've already mentioned, certain box codes lean towards high quality on the bell curve. Siglo VI with an MOU code would probably yield great results.

The one that I was thinking of specifically was the H Upmann Coronas Major. Been debating between getting them and the Petit Corona. For what I have gleaned reading old threads, it seems like El Prez' report on recent HUPCs was much more positive than in the past and I was curious if the CM were experiencing the same upswing.

Thanks Pres! I'm glad you somebody asked for this information because I've been wondering it myself. Very informative.

Why I frequent this site and I am willing to pay more because I have a better grasp on my cigars.

The whole system was based on "Rob, what is smoking well now?"

Right now I am loving the R&J Churchills and I never thought that would have been the case 18 months ago. You have to smoke current stock to gauge what is going on (if you are in the trade).

I hope that I have shown that there is no mystery to the selection process. Simply a way of maximising the chance of a very good experience in the tasting either short/mid/long term.

I'm holding out for some nice r and j Churchills in 24:24! Was the first cigar that I ever nubbed and was like wow, this is what it's all about.

I picked up some in a 24:24 sale a few weeks ago. I'm sure they'll come around again soon.

Thanks Prez for putting this together, just what I was looking for, seeing what crappy boxes look like. Guess I'll only be putting my coin here.. Bye bye buying blind! ;)

Very informative. It's nice to have access to this wisdom and focus on enjoying the smoking experience. It would take me years to see what Rob sees in a couple of months. I'll enjoy the fruits of his labor.

Thanks

The Trinidad Death Spiral has now gone back at least 5=6 years and possibly more. I do pull the occasional small seam of quality but overall the highest fail rate of any marque.

You enhance your chances no doubt. i know members here have had some great results with Boli Royal Corona Tubes over the pat 12 months. On an aside issue, Minor white mould in tubes is common. If you are going to freak out at white mould, best you avoid going shopping for tubes lmao.gif

I really don't smoke any H. Upmann Corona Major Tubes. I think it was in Cuba in November that one of our reprobate group commented how he smoked a ton of them and that they were excellent. You have me intrigued. I will give one a crack next week.

Here in Oz, Upmann Corona Major/R&J 1/2/3 Tubes/Punch Coronation Tubes are very much the domain of corner tobacconists and liquor stores. I am not meaning to denigrate them. i had a very good R&J 2 Tube last year where I bought something on a night out in the Cross. Nothing complex but good, solid, flavoursome toasted tobacco.

Spot on Rob! I started my cigar journey on these tubos. Actually, I had a few bad RyJ tubos, but for some reason I was able to score quite a few good and solid Punch Coronation Tubos.

That's so sad. I love the Fundadores and have a 2011 box that (thankfully) has been more hit than miss.

Great thread, such an invaluable resource to understand what is likely to be smoking well and which stuff to avoid. I'm very grateful to you Rob for taking the time, not just to pick through the stock but also taking the time to write up your thoughts and answer the various questions posed to you.

Cheers! :)

Couldn't agree more! Thanks as always for your hard work, Rob

Bit off topic, but Ive had mixed results with the above tubo cigars. Not overly complex and seem to need some significant rest to get good. An RYJ # 1at I was gifted once and I believe it was older stick tasted like pure dark honey and clean toasted tabacco.

Question please..

Is a darker wrapper better? If so, how can you tell it will be a better cigar just buy the looks?
