GavLew79 Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 It looks like Chateau Cantemerle. It wouldn't be Lafite, would it???
dangolf18 Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 Definitely Chateau Lafite. Back then it probably wasn't more than $8 a bottle.
... Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Awesome show in its own rights. Its graphic qualities, elegance and exquisite dialogues and now its taste in French wines! A classic
GavLew79 Posted January 30, 2015 Author Posted January 30, 2015 You are correct gents. Cantemerle has a big Ch Cantemerle under the (very similar from afar) picture, but it is Lafite. I recognised the label as one or the other and I've just checked. Cheers.
Ken Gargett Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 cantermerle used to have its vintage on a sticker up at the base of the neck. not sure when that stopped but it might still have been going on at the time of the program. and i think the lafite label is still the smallest they have in bordeaux. certainly was in the days the program is set.
Ken Gargett Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Ever had it Ken? lafite or cantemerle. not many cantemerles that i can recall. been fortunate to have seen a lot of lafite over the years. it is a wonderful wine. one from the early 50s stood out. 53 i think, without checking the notes. 82 always brilliant but a while since i have seen it. had an 87 with a mate recently that as a lot better than the vintage might suggest.
GavLew79 Posted January 31, 2015 Author Posted January 31, 2015 The Lafite. Sounds great. The meteoric price rises in the last decade probably precludes the average wine drinker from ever getting near it.
Ken Gargett Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 The Lafite. Sounds great. The meteoric price rises in the last decade probably precludes the average wine drinker from ever getting near it. never cheap but i was lucky i had mates who were buying when it was not much at all. the problem now is absolutely that, as you say. too expensive for most of us, even as a special bottle. so you have to have it in your cellar, try it at expensive tastings or dinners when you'll be lucky to get a thimblefull or be a russian oil magnate or saudi prince. 1
dangolf18 Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 Just did some research. A case of first growths in 1961 were $30/case on release (Lafite was $36). That's about 28 in today's dollars. I only wish such wines could be affordable now.
