proud to be an aussie...

as we count down to australia day, this arrived by email.

After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, British scientists
found traces of copper wire dating back 200 years and came to the
conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more
than 150 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the British, in the weeks
that followed, an American archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and
shortly after, a story published in the New York Times: “American
archaeologists, finding traces of 250-year-old copper wire, have
concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech
communications network 50 years earlier than the
British”.

One week later, Australia’s Northern Territory Times, reported
the following: “After digging as deep as 30 feet in their backyard in Tennant Creek, Northern
Territory, local self-taught archaeologists, reported
that they found absolutely f***-all.

The government has therefore concluded that 250 years ago, Australia had
already gone to wireless.”…

Makes me feel bloody proud to be
Australian!

i remember years ago, pre internet, someone researched time of travel UK to australia (when you had choice of airmail or sea for post - not that long ago). they worked out that captain cook could have delivered mail quicker than was being done by the authorities at the time.

Although I can't claim any actual Australian heritage, my parents lived there for a few years in the 70s, and moved back a month before I was born. So I've always felt an abstract tie to Australia. I know it's a strong and proud nation, and I'll raise my glass and have a drink to all the great Aussie folks I've had the pleasure of encountering, both in real life and on forums such as this. Cheers!

Yes! I figured my mother drank Aussie water, ate Aussie food, and breathed Aussie air when I was in the womb. That has to count for something, no? I cheer for Australia in the World Cup and the Ashes. Wife and I have resolved to visit when the kids are a bit older. Hopefully sooner than later.
