Skyfall Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Well, I've tried to appreciate the stylings of Aussie comedy, for it.years now and I just don't get it. Beyond: " That's not a knife, this is a knife!" I understand there is better comedy out there but damn, what a beat down trying to get to it. I've watched every single Jim Jeffery's special there is, and ..ehhh, nothing special, nothing real great. I've watched both seasons of Legit and it's funny at times, but nothing hardly groundbreaking. I've seen all of the Chris Lilley's shows he's done. Yes, I've actually watched them all, to my detriment. Nothing remotely funny, nothing remotely creative! What's the deal, am I missing something??? None of it even resembles humor or comedy!!!!! I honestly find more humor in the first two Crocodile Dundee movies than in any Chris Lilley show or Jim Jefferies Show. Don't even get me started on Iggy Izalea!!!!!!!!!! Don't go there Shame On You Oz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Skyfall Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 In the US Jim Jefferies, is the King of Australian Comedy....is that not true?? Anything Chris Lilly touches is HORRIBLE!!!!
El Presidente Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I have never heard of Jim Jefferies or Chris Lilley For my taste, great Aussie Comedy is far and few between, The Australian Comedy "Frontline" (based on a current affairs show ) was Aussie Comedy at its best. I still believe it was solely responsible for changing the Australian perception of "Current Affairs News Shows" from gospel .....to one step below ambulance chasing lawyers. 1

I'm not saying you are false, but Jim Jefferies, is one of the biggest comedians in the US right now and his whole MO or stick it being from Oz. He's a big deal with a huge Network TV series and several HBO and Showtime Specials dedicated just for him. He is THE Auussie Comic around the world.
Skyfall Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 ^ and I don't believe you have never heard of either Chris Lilly or Jim Jeffereis! That's like saying you have never heard of Mick Dundee!
El Presidente Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 mate....never heard of him ..seriously. A little like "Outback Restaurants"....until I went to the US...never knew they existed! 1
nikonNUT Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Well, I'm not well versed in Aussie comedy but the bit Steve Hughes did on secondary smoke made me laugh.
Magpie Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 ^ and I don't believe you have never heard of either Chris Lilly or Jim Jeffereis! That's like saying you have never heard of Mick Dundee! Never heard of these guys either. Skyfall, see if you can find a guy called Carl Barron on YouTube or DVD , typical Aussie style humour. Also a guy called Jimeion ( yeah that's correct spelling) , he's Irish but lived in Oz for years.
polarbear Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 If you're looking at TV, Look up: The Glass House Spicks and Speck (2012 and earlier) The Chaser's War on Everything Mrs Brown Boys Movies: The Castle Cracker Jack Getting Square
polarbear Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 ^ and I don't believe you have never heard of either Chris Lilly or Jim Jeffereis! That's like saying you have never heard of Mick Dundee! If it wasnt for his "taking a guy with Muscular Distrofy to a brothel" bit he did on one of his specials (and then the first ep of his sit com) I wouldnt know how Jim Jeffereis is either As for Chris Lilly... I wish I'd never heard of that guy, total Hack!
Ken Gargett Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 may i (and here comes something i never thought i would say), defend rob. i have absolutely no idea who jim jeffries is. i probably watch a lot more tv than rob so would be more likely to have at least heard of him but i have no idea. chris lilley - saw abut two minutes and gave up. hogan had some great moments (and as mentioned in anther thread recently, i love 'rake' - but that might be more funny for lawyers). frontline was a classic. but no one comes close to the great norman gunston. i posted a link to an interview he did with sally struthers, one of his classics. watch it and a few other and i'll then happily try and explain him. but you would not be the first of our beloved seppo mates to have no idea what he is about.
Skyfall Posted May 2, 2014 Author Posted May 2, 2014 If none of you have ever heard of Jim Jeffereis, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts after you watched the clips I posted.
Ken Gargett Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 you've posted over two hours! i'll try and give it a go over the weekend.

Ken Gargett Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 okay, i gave him six minutes. six minutes i cannot recover. there might be a reason he is no longer in oz. we like funny comedians. and you guys have more than enough genuinely funny comedians than to put up with this. surely?
polarbear Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 Also, if you have some understanding of Australia Politics and life in general you might enjoy Clarke and Dawe There is also the orignal king of aussie comedy, Graham Kennedy A Clip for The Glass House, a show that features 3 Aussies and 2 international guests every week
Coolio Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 If none of you have ever heard of Jim Jeffereis, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts after you watched the clips I posted. I'd seen some of Jim Jefferies stuff elsewhere, but I don't like his style. He's not well known at all in Oz. The more successful Aussie comedians over the years have been, IMO, comedians with a more laconic style of humour, like Carl Barron, Jimoein (as Magpie mentioned) and Adam Hills. Jefferies humour is too abrasive for me. But that's just me! The more popular (in Oz anyway) Aussie comics all take the piss extremely well, but in a way that even if you're the subject, you'd be laughing. Do yourself a favour Skyfall and watch some of Adam Hills stuff. Start with this one: 1
