El Presidente Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I have been in discussion with John DeCosta of Cigar Sanctum for some 6 months now. John was referred to me through Rob Fox so automatically I knew he was a reprobate The more I learned about him, the more we hit it off and have been in regular correspondence since. John has been designing jewellery for 25 years for his woman's jewellery line - talesfromtheearth.com -and travelling to Cuba for the past 20 years...as he says it "drinking too much rum and not smoking enough cigars". He also loves a wine and a gin which gives him a head start in my book! Based in London, he is on the road four or five months a year, exploring new cultures and seeking design influences. Havana features prominently. He is married to an Argentine lady who smokes Trinidads and has a little boy called Valentino. I don't spruik many peoples products. Yet where I see a person who is passionate and who is producing some excellent work, I am more than happy to do so. There is a beauty to the symmetry of great passion, design and execution. Having seen John's work first hand, I am more than happy to recommend his Cigar Jewellery. The Cigar Sanctum creed is simple. In Puros Amicitia. In Cigars There Is Friendship. The idea that, through smoking cigars, lifelong friendships are made and cemented. The notion of a cigar sanctum reinforces this - although it applies as much to the solitary enjoyment of a good cigar as to a group of friends putting the world right in a haze of blue smoke. Quite simply, when one smokes a cigar, the chaos of the world stops for a few moments. Thoughts are released, friends are made. PHILOSOPHY That passion permeates every aspect of how the cigar smoker views the world. The same DNA that appreciates the rolling and enjoyment of a good cigar offers a predisposition to the other marvels of life - the art of conversation, books, music (I'm currently listening to Coltrane), food, wine, travel and fashion. Not fashion in a GQ way, but in a way that one carries one's own style. And from the latter - and a few bottles of Barbaresco - Cigar Sanctum was born. Easy enough to find clothes to buy, but jewellery that states the wearer's creed - I'm passionate about cigars - well, that doesn't exist. Until now. Designs Each design carries a story; nothing is purely cosmetic. Key rings and cufflinks figure prominently, as they're the most utilitarian pieces, but we're also designing necklaces that allow the wearer to make a statement. The Smoking Skull says 'our time here is fleeting, make every day count'. The Partagas Factory says 'I'm a D4 man' (or fill in cigar accordingly). The Crossed Cigars, based on armorial designs, symbolise the rich history of cigar smoking. Our designs appeal to the passionate nature of the cigar smoker. John did a launch of Cigar Sanctum at the 2014 Habanos Festival to a great reception from cigar lovers worldwide. You can see his write up here. I would recommend that you visit his site and peruse some of the work that he is doing. Whether you are a buyer or not...it doesn't really matter. Drop him a line with your thoughts and encouragement! I will always support a person in this love which is cigars who has passion. John has it in spades. Well done mate. I wish you every success Rob
Ryan Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I first met John deCosta in Pinar del Rio last year. Really nice guy. Had a few drinks with him here and there at this year's festival. I was at the launch in Espacios in February. Great fun and the work is nice quality. I believe Punch Joe wears a piece now.. Some really nice stuff.
straizor Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 also had the pleasure to meet john in habana. really great guy. very genuine person very nice work he's doing. i enjoy his work, and i think i'm going to buy some of his stuff.
bolivr Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 Bravo! I like it. I'm not a big jewelry wearer so I need a good reason to 'jewel up'. If it's cigar related then it's ahead of everything else.
AndrewNR Posted April 28, 2014 Posted April 28, 2014 I was pleasantly surprised opening this thread, very cool. Going for a look now
El Presidente Posted April 28, 2014 Author Posted April 28, 2014 . I believe Punch Joe wears a piece now.. Oh please tell me it is a "Gangsta" chain Jose loves listening to all music but has a soft spot for rap I keep telling him that bad arse people don't have a demented Dalmatian as a pet. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that the DNA gene pool for Dalmatians in Cuba is ....well..."thin" . 1
