Colt45 Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Construction: Firm but light in hand, feels just right. Wrapper: Colorado in color, on the silky side with a light tooth. Light, even sheen of oil. Pre-light Aroma / Draw / Taste: Muted aroma, nice draw - very light tobacco taste with a touch of sweetness. Draw / Burn / Smoke Volume: Excellent all around. Taste: First draws get right down to RyJ business - fairly dry, woody, a bit of leather, with the pre-light sweet tinge remaining. Nicely medium in body. Mid first third, body picks up. More earthy, the smoke almost oily, savory spices, with the finish and overall character what I would call dry. Drawing on, sweet notes return. Smoothly spicy with the finish remaining dry, but now showing a light flavor of stewed fruits. Overall impressions into the middle third: An earthy core with some green notes, wrapped in a light layer of sweetness (crystallized sugar) and savory spices, finishing with a sense of lightly cooked (and on some draws, dried) fruit. Each draw is a bit different than the last. More earthy, less so. Some sweetness, then some green chilis. Body thickens, body smooths to medium. There is nice complexity, with a non-linear evolution. Flavors / sensations are apparent but not imbalanced. Moving into the final third, it begins to settle into it's earthier character. Dense body, quality tobacco flavor, dry-ish mouth feel, the finish tinged with the earlier ancillary elements. It continues to become a bit darker, but not harsh or bitter. Slipping off the single gold band, my thoughts are that it has not been a "WOW" cigar, in that there has been nothing unexpected - but that there is really nothing more I could ask for in a great cigar. Nearing the end, it does become quite spicy / black pepper dominant, but it has been nothing but completely enjoyable.
Maplepie Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Wicked review i'm guessing this was a square box pressed one instead of the tubes? i always say: nothing better than a nice aged RyJ Churchill in a Tube! gives it a smoother draw and negates the spicy black pepper in the end that turns it into a Partagas flavour. 1
Colt45 Posted February 22, 2014 Author Posted February 22, 2014 i'm guessing this was a square box pressed one instead of the tubes? Indeed these are dress box. The last tubos I had were from around 2005 - I enjoyed them very much
Stanislaw Posted February 23, 2014 Posted February 23, 2014 Nice review, thank you.... I actually just smoked one from a 1998 box and your review mirrors my experience and thoughts exactly.....
