Nedule Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 I'm headed to San Francisco in 2 weeks for a 5 day weekend & wondering if anyone in the area can recommend a cigar bar/restraunt. I've looked up a few on the interwebs but I always like to go by local advice. I'm staying at the Fairmont on Mason St, looks like they have a smoking room there & a couple other bars in the area. Any recommendations?

I've looked up a few on the interwebs but I always like to go by local advice. I'm staying at the Fairmont on Mason St, looks like they have a smoking room there & a couple other bars in the area. Any recommendations? There's a small cigar shop in the Fairmont that sells pre-embargo cubans (very pricey). I believe they have a small smoking lounge in the back of the shop. The only real cigar bar I know of is the Occidental Cigar Club. I highly recommend it! Drink prices are a little high though ($17 for Oban 14, around $24 I believe for Lagavulin 16).
Nedule Posted December 30, 2013 Author Posted December 30, 2013 thanks, do you know anything about The Cigar Bar & Grill, looks good on their webiste. http://www.cigarbarandgrill.com/
dangolf18 Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 thanks, do you know anything about The Cigar Bar & Grill, looks good on their webiste. http://www.cigarbarandgrill.com/ I work in the FiDi in SF, so I've never ventured there. I've heard the place is moreso frequented by cigarettes smokers than cigar smokers.

Lotusguy Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 thanks, do you know anything about The Cigar Bar & Grill, looks good on their webiste. http://www.cigarbarandgrill.com/ I often hang out at the Occidental. Highest recommendation. Drink prices are typical for San Francisco (i.e. high) but at least they pour very generously. You usually meet some interesting people there. PM me once you know your exact schedule and I may meet up with you there. I've been to the Cigar Bar and their smoking section is more of a covered courtyard. Nowhere near as much fun as the Occidental but they do serve food.
SokaKiel Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I can only agree with Claus/Lotusguy! I had the pleasure of meeting him and his buddy Ted at Occidental in October this year, what a blast! Lots of smokes, drinks n fun! Shame I can't be in Norcali more often! Enjoy your time in San Francisco!
plagreid Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I can only vouch for The Humidor (shop) and Occidental Cigar Bar -- both get thumbs up from me, despite those damn California taxes.
dangolf18 Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 BTW, if you rent a car, There's a place about 25 minutes outside town in San Anselmo called Ludwigs. They have a good selection of cigars and the best selection of scotch in the Bay Area bar none. I'm talking about 100+ different scotches and their prices are unbeatable.

Nedule Posted December 31, 2013 Author Posted December 31, 2013 Thanks guys. Road trip would be awesome but this holidays is with my wife & no kids, so dragging her on a road trip might cost me if she revenge shops. On the bright side, she does like the smell of a cigar, so should be no issue spending a couple hours at a bar. I'll PM you Lotusguy, see if it works out.
nick87night Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 occidental cigar bar is a great place to go. it's quite small but the staff is friendly and they have a lot of scotch/whiskeys. their selection of stogies is limited but well kept. if you want a daytime venture, head over to burlingame tobacconist. (1404 Burlingame Ave) it's about 25 min from downtown San Francisco, but they have a very wide selection of cigars and they have a nice little lounge in the back with a TV.
thecrowder Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Occidental is your best bet. You can even order dinner from some of the nearby restaurants and they will deliver it to you at the bar. I live a few blocks away and would be more than happy to meet up for a cigar and a drink when you're in town.
PapaDisco Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 Hey Ned, I live in SF and the Occidental is great and so is the Cigar Bar and Grill. I've only seen it filled with cigar aficionados, not cig smokers. Their selection of sticks is definitely non-cuban, but it is crowded, noisy and friendly. Also, since you're staying at the Fairmont, see if you have a friend who's a member of the University Club just a block over. They have a smoking balcony just outside their most excellent bar and it's a lovely view. The Cigar Bar and Grill is in the Jackson Square/North Beach area which is absolutely chock-a-block with excellent restaurants and seedy blues bars. Just a half block from the Cigar Bar is one of my favorites: Bix, which has live music and an excellent menu and is something of a SF institution. About a block and a half away is the new Cafe Tosca on Columbus Avenue. Outstanding wine and menu. SF in general is very anti-smoking, but the restaurants are good.
