Ken Gargett Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 You think this all started because of Sterling? This thread is from last October. 9 months ago. This story did not start with Sterling. C'mon, man! Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk agreed. been going on for some time. but the sterling thing gave the skins haters a chance to fire up the issue again. i think most people had got bored with it, and clearly synder will not budge, so it will bubble along for a while, die down again, and then thee next time something unrelated happens, away we go again.
Drguano Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 A very long time ago, I had an idea that sports teams should all be names for foods. You would have the Denver Omelettes, the Kansas City Ribs, the Boston Baked Beans etc. Well that idea was put on the back burner, so to speak and then the whole menu was 86'd. I lost my appetite for sports marketting for a while until I came up with the perfect (to me) campaign. A woman's sports team from Indianapolis. Their logo would be a woman in medieval armor. The team name would be...The Indiana Joans. That idea went up in smoke as well. With my reputation at stake, I gave up.
sam Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 I really dislike and resist the PC concept. I don't take anything negative from the connotation. But given that there is apparently more than a few folks that find the name offensive, I think that they should change it and move on. I really don't think it should be a big deal or is so important that that it is worth all the resistance. ---Sam
Smalls Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 I am not native american, but my wife's family is from the Choctaw tribe. The best way to describe how they feel about issues like this is… Indifferent. They don't take offense to it and don't really concern themselves with what a team might call themselves. There was a state school here that changed its name from the Redmen not too long ago. However, that change was prompted by the NCAA from what I understand. It was not started by the local native american community. Once the issue came up there were some that agreed it should be changed though. I have numerous friends and family that are proudly native american. However, I haven't personally ever heard any of them take issue with it.. Even when it came up in conversation.

If it was your team, you might have the same view as the Redskins owner that the name has been Redskins for 80 years and it's not gonna change no matter what.
