My wife wants to take me to Norway , the old country, for a week. All I know is that it can be very expensive. Does anyone have any tips? Never really liked staying in the tourist destinations.

Its very very expensive. A good idea could be to bring some of the stuff you might need while there - depending on your accomodation of course.

Alcohol and tobacco is in particular very expensive as I recal. Close to 30$ us for a six pack of beers!

Wonderful nature, nasty prices

The ferry from Denmark is said to have a sellecion of duty free cc's !

TripAdvisor has a lot of great info on stuff like this. I found it enormously useful when planning a trip to Austria.

Apparently we have a 22hr layover in Copenhagen, and fly from there to Oslo for six nights. I do like beer, but don't think I will pay 30 US for a six pack, holiday or not.

A beer (ie a pint) is about 14 dollars.

It's hideously expensive.

But, it is a beautiful land.

While in Oslo, I'd recommend checking out the museum island, and the Viking ship museum.

If you have the chance, hire a car and take the scenic route to Bergen...it's marvellous, maybe there is a train if you can't get a car. Also good places are Flam, and any parts of the Fjord lands...

If you can be bothered, check out the link to my blog, for a more acurate description of the things we did while there..

Also, Copenhagen is a great city..didn't find cigars, but did find good pipe shops there. I believe there is a Davidhoff shop there somewhere..no cigars in Norway.

Everyone is right, it's awfully expensive.

Oslo is an awesome city, for all the right reasons, i.e. people, food, architecture, events.

But if you can, I find the further north you go the better it gets.

Travelled on a ferry out of Tromsø through Finnsnes out into the Lofoten and Stamstund.

Stamstund is a special place.

It's a little fishing village and you can visit the huge whaling sheds that are still around.

We even got a chance to surf, inside the arctic circle, in winter. Good times.

Make sure you take cigars.

I didn't. And all my Scandinavian friends were well into their snus. Holy headspins!

Thanks guys. we also have a layover in Amsterdam, probably won't get to visit the red light district as my wife will be with me, but maybe a little window shopping...

While in Amsterdam enjoy the 'window shopping'! innocent.gif Haven't been there for 15 years but well enjoyed my last trip!

Check out the LCDH, haven't been there myself but lots of guys from a German board shop there regularly. I've ordered aged stuff from them and was pretty happy so far!

Oslo is an amazing city, great people, good food, cool waterfront and Norway boosts one of the most beautiful landscapes in Europe. Try to get out of town, as mentioned by the guys before, rental or by train to Bergen is the way to go!

Just pack lots of smokes and a warm Jacket, I think there is pretty much no more indoor smoking allowed in Norwaypod.gif

Have fun!

Amsterdam is incredible. The red light district is a waste of time. Just walk around the main core of the city and enjoy the sites and do a serious beer audit. Check out Benelux RE cigars. They are wonderful. Watch for bicycles! Riders do not stop at intersections, there are tons of them and they basically own the road.

The Casa Del Habano is owned by the nicest guy named Didi. It is in one of the fanciest hotels ( sorry forget the name). If you buy enough cigars, ask him if he has any really nice boxes to take them home in. He gave me a stunning Monte GR black lacquer box.

See if you can meet up with fellow FOH member Michel1961. He is a delight.
