Natedog Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I couldn't resist. I have only had them in my humidor for 1 week but they smelled so freaking good. Sweet hay and barn. I had the house all to my self except my two labs and its beautiful this time of year in Vegas. I like a bit of a tight draw so I punched a hole. Toasted with cedar spills and started off. Well...I tried to start off...the draw was way too tight. Grabbed my guillotine and snipped off a bit. Draw was a little better but much tighter than I like. The burn started uneven. I hope it corrects itself. Not putting off very much smoke and the flavor to start is one dimensional spicy/peppery. It continues like this for a little over the first third. The burn corrects itself but still very tight. I need to draw on it 3-4 times to get a mouthful of smoke and its smoking a little hot. Getting more flavor now a little cocoa, woodshop cedar, and dried mango (the pepper/spice continues) . I like those flavors but I wish they were more upfront. Getting a little menthol too. This continues to the last third and that's when I put my first RASS TO BED. I DIDN'T WANT TO FIGHT with the tight draw anymore. This was a good cigar but not anything memorable. I will let them sit for a few months before I try another one.
nonameno Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Hi Natedog, I have never had a draw problem with a RASS, so I am wondering if they just need more time in the humidor after their journey. I think your plan of trying again in a couple months will bring you a much more rewarding experience. I will look forward to your update! Thank you, Curtiss
mk05 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Welcome to Foh. It is recommended to let RASS sit for 4 years.
Natedog Posted March 23, 2013 Author Posted March 23, 2013 Just 4 yrs? Can I smoke my PSD4 this decade? Hahaha...wait you are kidding right?
stargazer14 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I have the same box and mine are great. Give it time.
Natedog Posted March 23, 2013 Author Posted March 23, 2013 I have the same box and mine are great. Give it time. Do you have the same date and box code or just same sticks?
mk05 Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 Just 4 yrs? Can I smoke my PSD4 this decade? Hahaha...wait you are kidding right? D4's are great within 6 months and then they go flat for about 3 years.
SCgarman Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 RASS are very good after a year of rest. IMO they really do not need 3 years as they are not a full bodied cigar. Not harsh when young.
Charltonc Posted March 23, 2013 Posted March 23, 2013 I prefer RASS with age, but I smoke RASCC fresh. RASS can be approachable fresh depending on box. I have had box luck with 2011 RASS from dress boxes. I am debating picking up a cab.
Upmann2009 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Smoke PSD4 straight out of the box and its so great and I burnt through a box of 10 within a week, then another box of ten. Then 2 boxes of 25 ordered and they are great every time and they are from 12. As for RASS, I hear a lot of good thing about it , just like PSD4 or even better. This time instead of tested the water with a box of 10, I pulled a trigger with a order of 2 box of 25 ( tried to get a cab of 50 but not in stock). When they came I tried one, smell great at cold but when burnt is another story (horrible). I though I would let it sit , and it wad already 6 months and 15 sticks burnt and I cound not crack this RASS open ( I wanted to so much). Now I put the rest RASS into my PSD4 boxes and laid it to rest (hate the square press look). That was my experience with RASS, one of the best Cuban (?). Cheers Jason
1fastmach1 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 I've actually been trying to find a fiver of theses on another forum. I hear they are a great smoke.
LeafLover Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Just smoked first cigar out of a Jul 12 RASS box. Was so incredibly good. This box is going to be incredible. Transferred them into an empty 50 box cab after massaging them box press out of it (as best I could).
BMack Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Sounds like it was too wet. I personally think they taste good fresh...but let them rest and they become AMAZING.
Phillys Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I have the exact same box (MUR AUG 12), mine are great, I do however do not get the same flavor profile. I get sweet cedar notes and a hint of pepper at the beginning throughout the smoke. I also get sweet dried fruit or dried black cherrys with a slight creaminess (sort of like black cherry ice cream). The sweetness blends in nicely, yet sometimes it gets a little heavy, but luckily it then transitions to a more peppery taste and soft sweetness. They also smoke like a charm. No relights, perfect draw. Sucks that we have had such different experiences. What do you sticks look like? mine are dark and a little blotchy darker spots everywhere.
