H.Upmann Magnum 50. Box code LAE SEP 10. Vitola size: 6.2x50.

Cold observations: Wrapper is torn at the foot a little but otherwise the construction is nice. Very spicy, peppery aroma at the foot. Draw is quite loose, a lot of salty flavours on the cold draw. I can already tell this is going to be interesting.

First third: Medium-bodied syrupy honey sweetness at first, which threw me off as I was expecting big spicy pepper. A slight rye cereal note reminding me of American whisky. A worn leather note pushing its way through, alongside touches of hickory and saltwater.

Second third: An interesting rum note developing out of the honey, with a bit of pistachio around the edges. Subtle drop in body. Some of the cereal and spice is falling away leaving a much less complex flavour profile in the middle here.

Final third: The rich honey is coming back for an encore. Still quite leathery, now with the addition of some dried/processed red meats (beef jerky and pepperoni). Body climbs slowly up to medium-full.

I found this reminiscent to a Siglo VI that I tried about a month ago. One of the better Upmanns I've had but I still haven't been wowed by the marque. Favourite so far has been this one's little brother, the Magnum 46.

83/100

Hi Ash,

Thanks for the review.

I am a big fan of upmann, notice that upmann are better with age and stored in 69-71RH will be wonder.

Bottom line, cigars are very subjective and personal preferences.

Thumbs up for all your reviews.

Jason

Ps. Where do you live in the globe bro ?

Just smoked one from a 5'er I bought from FOH back in 08 and it was a nice cigar with a solid core of aged tobacco, a nice light spice through the nose and some cream, very smooth, med bodied at best but I'd rate it an 88 overall. A good solid cigar yes, but I personally wouldn't search any out. Id rather have the mongrel from the Mag 46 but I also like the 46 RG better too. I have one 50' left that will prob be smoked very soon seeing as I don't think these have changed to much in 5yrs so I don't expect much in another 3-5yrs. Good now so why not smoke it, right.

These cigars are wonderful but for me they are on the strong side. I enjoy the Partagas D4 better. The only line of cigar that I think is on par with the D4 is the Monte 2 and anything from Trinidad.

I've smoked few of these sticks last summer and i can't help the feeling that this cigar is one of those: wind tunnel draw - not the best construction ever - not so rich in aroma and pretty ''booring''...or is it just in my case? :(

(H.Upmann 46 - totally different story)

Hi,

My experience is limited as I am currently on my 1 st cab from 09, not a single have any issue about the draw, some of my friends found it a bit tight, ( for me perfect, I like it a bit of resistance). The flavors are complex and interesting, for the time to smoke, it's boring as it would take me about 1.5-2 hrs to smoke one.

Personally, i like mag50 over the 46 but my mag 46 from 12, so i would think ages would do wonder to theose mag 50.

Have tried a few over the years and never been impressed. Got a PSP box of 10 from Rob over that 12 days of xmas sale. The first one I smoked was dead on and I was taken back. That seemed to change my opinion a bit have to see what the next 9 do.

Nice review, I'm considering these from the hand picked selection.
