(Mine has "disappeared") I know I want something between a compact and a full on SLR. I guess the best description is SLR-like, ( no removable lenses). Any input would be great. Thanks!

David, I also suggest you find out more about Ken Rockwell before relying on his photography equipment reviews. I like the equipment reviews by Digital Photography Review much better and the site has user forums where feedback can be sought.

tdlfoto Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 you'll get as many opinions as there are cameras. i don't follow the point & shoot that closely but will say that i don't think you'd go wrong with either Nikon or Canon, in general. go for an "Advanced P&S" or "Prosumer P&S" or what ever they call them. Don't get sucked into the megapixel myth - it's an upsell ploy.

I also like the Fuji X100 but if you aren't really into photography and just want to take nice pictures then go with the G15, it won't disappoint. Or get into the hobby a little, and pick up a 5D mark II!
tdlfoto Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 i have the X100 and while it's a cool little cam capable of some great imagery, it takes some effort getting to a point where you consistently shoot solid stuff, and also the fixed focal length lens is a deal breaker for most general users.

I had great experiences with Canon, but before that had all Sony and they were crap. But try out whatever's in your budget range and see what you like best.
Squarehead Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 It's the guy who takes the pic and not the camera.if you know how to handle a camera then you make great pics,if not,well then you get lousy pics.Personally,I have an Olympus,only 7.1mp's.great pics and as with all dig.cameras you can delete on the spot what you don't like.As with all electronics,you can't win the war,the moment you buy,something better just came out and cheaper.

Also known as EVIL or DSLM cameras, they combine the multiple lens funactionality of DSLRs within the size of a compact. Check out the new Canon EOS M, Nikon 1 orPanasonic Lumix GX-1.
tdlfoto Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 a couple things that tend to really bugger up people's experience with taking photos, especially of children, are (1) delay between hitting shutter and actual capture, and (2) flash recycle time. I highly suggest you inquire about these two factors when you start to narrow down.
edlye Posted October 25, 2012 Posted October 25, 2012 Here's the deal: I am not into photography, I don't want to get that much into photography, my wife was, and she stole my camera when she left. I have primary custody of my almost 3 year old boy, and with Halloween, his Birthday and the Holidays coming up, I want an easy camera that takes awesome pics, clear and focused pics and a better zoom than the compact cameras, so I can capture good memories indoor and out. The Lumix LX-7 seems to fit the bill, the f1.4 - 2.3 lens is fast enough indoors and for low light conditions. Couple this fast lens with its touted 11fps shooting speed and a class 6 or higher memory card you'll be able to capture most moments with restless kids. The built-in ND filter will handle overly bright outdoor lighting situations as well. Best to handle and test your camera choices in store before making a decision.

A few members mentioned dpreview (which I like as well). Another I like quite a bit is photographyblog.com, and engadget isn't too bad either. Good luck with it, and I'd be interested in hearing what you think after you've spent some time with it.
