An Opinion Requested on the Grand Cherokee.

I am thinking of purchasing the new Grand Cherokee, the Overland Summit.I would like to hear any opinions-feedback, from members who own one or driven it, how do you evalute it.

Well, they've traditionally had reliability problems and terrible safety crash ratings. I subscribe to Consumer Reports and LIVE in the automobile coverage section. When autos are brand, brand new they don't have the necessary feedback to give. I know they are popular - they've been the most stolen vehicles out there! But as far as whether it's going to give you heartaches and problems repair-wise you may be better off with a Hyundai or even better a Subaru SUV. Just my 2 cents.

I thought they were pretty reliable cars, just gas hogs. If you like them the best from other choices of SUVs then I'd say go for it. If you want something more reliable I'd look into Honda pilots or Toyota 4runner.

I purchased the G C limited around three weeks ago and it is great. Yes, it has a large engine (although you have the option of a smaller engine if you don't need the V8 - not sure on the overland) and it is not the best on gas but it has improved considerably over the past few years in that area.

It is really well appointed inside and feels like a luxury car. The few friends who have ridden inside it so far have all been impressed at the vast improvement over older models.

it is a lot of car for the money and when the snow is on the roads and I'm on the way up the mountain I'm sure I'll appreciate it's off road abilities which are as good as anything out there that looks this nice - although I will be trying to keep it looking pristine for as long as possible.

In short, I wasn't sure when we were looking but I'm very happy with the decision now.

Reliability ratings noted above are based on the last generation vehicle. The current one, started in 2010 model year (i think) is based on the Mercedes suv platform and was developed during the time Daimler owned Chrysler. Rock solid and very comfortable. I have a 2012 Overland Summit with the hemi v8 motor. My wife has a 2011 Overland with the v6. The v6 is powerful enough if you don't tow much. I have a 3500 pound boat so I prefer the v8. The new Chrysler, post bankruptcy, has made a remarkable turnaround with the quality and styling of their products. Take a test drive and if you like it I would not hesitate.

I've driven my pop's new body style GC a couple times and I'm always amazed at how quiet it is and not a harsh ride at all. The fit & finish seems better than in previous years as well.

I have an 06 Grand Cherokee Laredo Anniversary Edition. It's a total gas hog, but has been very reliable. The only thing that I've had fixed not related to a car accident was the fan/motor for the air conditioner and heater (my particular car is cursed as it has been hit three times 2 of which while parked overnight and rear ended once). I also need to say that I put low mileage on my car, I only have 55k on it right now. Although it is city driving.

If you are interested, on YT there are a set of clips from a Swedish car magazine where they say it fails the "elk-test". This is denied by Chrysler.

For what it's worth, I've owned several SUV's and the 2nd gen navigator (03-06) takes tops for comfort, space, reliability for me. Only one problem in well over 100k miles was the air ride suspension....pump gave out so I swapped out with a normal coil over struts and all was well.

Sure, this isn't a 4x4 vehicle, just my $0.02.
