Hazza Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Hey all, I'm travelling to Bali (Kuta) soon for my friends wedding and have been given the task of supplying some Cuban cigars. Just hoping someone out there knows if I'm better off Buying them in Oz and taking them with me ( only taking a box ) or if there are good, reputable sellers over there that are reasonably priced. Would much appreciate any suggestions, cheers.

westg Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Take your own..Most decent restaurants carry a small collection of cubans which are on par in price with Australian dollars and Malaysia $.You could always try the locally made Tambos which come in various formats and are reasonably priced (not that good).Bali did have a make shift La Casa Del Habano ..it has now gone..
hanhan Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 hey hazza, best off buying them on your way out of Australia in duty free, if they do sell cigars exiting. There are some good but expensive vendors here in Jakarta, but some of the prices in Bali are ridiculous. You don't want to be taking any chances when it comes to a wedding.
JoshMP Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 Take them in with you I'd say. Don't want to take chances when it's a wedding! Also expect to pay a "tax" in cash on your way through.
Hazza Posted July 23, 2012 Author Posted July 23, 2012 Awesome. Thanks for the advice. I've heard that the duty free in Perth doesn't store cigars properly so it's pretty hit and miss. Getting them before I go sounds like the way to do it. Much appreciate the input though
Fuzz AI Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 One thing to take note is the new duty free concessions coming into effect on 1st September. Not sure if Customs will give you any grief bringing cigars back into the country, unless you have the receipt showing duty was paid. I'd give Customs a call just to check.
cupsspoon Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 Perfectly timed question - heading on my belated honeymoon to Ubud & Seminyak and was just about to ask this question. Guess I should pick up some before I go after hearing responses!
Yoruba Hacker Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 Been to Bali 5 times and have never had a problem with inauthentic Cuban cigars. In fact, Bali was the place I had the first and still best VRU I ever had, and that was at a hotel bar. That said I haven't been since '06 and didn't know the La Casa closed. Too bad. Bought a fistful of Hamlet stuff he'd left after rolling there right before I arrived. And on a purely price basis, I expect that it's cheaper to bring your own. Do you have a sense of how many people are actually going to smoke them (versus a couple of puffs and a pitch)? In other words, if there are only like six or seven of you, you're better off buying singles for that select few who will appreciate it. That way you can buy like 10-12, hand them out in advance, and spend less than you would with a box from home. Less of a price issue buying there at that, but of course you can still bring singles from home. Unless that would come off rude...
Dimmers Posted July 27, 2012 Posted July 27, 2012 My only advice - whatever option you take, make sure you have a humidor on hand. In Bali a few yrs ago with friends and a stash of choice sticks. The humidity killed the sticks we had later in the trip
