Jnaube Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 After months of questionning myself, I bought a box of Diplo's no2 in Cuba to see what the fuss was all about. I have to say that at start, I really wasn't impressed with the product, even if it's produced at the same factory Montecristo's are... My first observation was that the wrapper was really pale and the construction of the stick was somewhat bumpy and veiny. Without no surprises, the first 5 or 6 cigars of this 2010 box were really, really bad and harsh, kinda like a young Monte 1. So, as any afficionado would do, I forgot the cigars in one of my humidors until now. It's simply impossible to describe how well it aged. At first, the smell of the stick, not even lit, struck me as it was incredibly smooth, milky with notes of honey. The first third of the stogie was increibly light and velvety with clear notes of cedar and vanilla. The pull was impeccable and the burn was even. Funny fact, near the end of the first third I started to taste some bitterness but that taste was overcompensated by some surprising caramel notes. Cedar was still there with a hint of cherry wood too. Somewhere around its middle, the cigar got a bit stronger with aromas of humid wood. The flavor lasted for about an inch. The last third of this was dominated by earthy tobacco flavor. It took me about an hour to smoke. If you like piramides like I do, it's a cigar I strongly recommned but you'll definitly have to let it age for at least a year if you wanna enjoy it's full potential! An amazing deal for the price.
ronin Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 A great cigar that does not get enough credit. Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
phoenix Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Pale wrapper? That doesn't sound like any Dip #2 I've ever had. Are yo sure they are legit?
gigabyte056 Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Pale wrapper? That doesn't sound like any Dip #2 I've ever had. Are yo sure they are legit? Dip's come in two variations, either pale without much oil on it or darker Monte like with tons of sheen. All of them require one to two years for full maturation, after 3-5 years they are fantastic. Love the marca, wish it wasn't as neglected as it is but you can't beat the number game.

Thanks for the clarification I must be spoiled by Rob's PSP program. All of mine have been the dark Colorado to almost Colorado Madura oil laden wrappers. And agreed... these do take years to come around.
rcarlson Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Then mine will stay in the humi. The few I had were exactly as you described before age.

phoenix Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Here is an example of the rich Colorado wrapper version from one of my PSP boxes EMA AGO 08...
sw15825 Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 I have a box, well 8 sticks left of EMA JUL 08. They are some of my favorite cigars!! But like others said, It took 3 years for me to like the smoke and they are now phenomenal! Mine also have some lighter brown wrappers, without oils, but are smoking so well. I have learned that wrapper color does not mean everything and is not necessarily stronger or better with darker wrappers, imho.

In my experience, I have in general found the lighter, less oily wrappers to be more accessible now, while the darker/oily wrappers usually need time to age and come around...

This also makes alot of sense as my boxes with dark, oily wrappers, like colorado maduros are too tannic and sweet for my tastes. What comes to mind is an early 08 box of Siglo IVs that I have and smoked one stick from last month are not ready. They are tannic but still have potential and I feel will come around in some more years. I have not smoked cc cigars long enough to know if I will prefer these down the road, but time will tell. Look forward to others who might have more time smoking to give some ideas on this.
