winelover Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 We have a long bank holiday weekend here to mark 60 years of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. It occurred to me that she's also the sovereign of quite a few Commonwealth nations and in theory rules over the Canadians, Aussie's and Kiwi's to name a few. I am not doing anything myself to mark it as I am not a massive monarchist. Whilst others I know are putting up the bunting, waving the flags and "celebrating" I find it all a bit strange. I respect the Queen, believe she does a good job and would certainly not want to overthrow the Monarchy as I am a conservative and believe if it ain't broke don't fix it. I like the stability of the system. Still, I don't feel any affinity towards her so how can I celebrate? Indifferent I guess. Any members here taking any notice? Cheers Graham
CaptainQuintero Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Free BBQ and beers to celebrate something which brings in billions via tourism = happy Cap'n It's strange to have someone in the establishment who's actually good at their job and hasn't a slime-trail behind them 10 miles long. Pretty impressive for someone her age to be doing 500+ engagements a year no matter what their upbringing is too. Given the alternative (i.e. a politician) I'd stick with the Queen every day of the week. If I was from the Commonwealth I'm not sure if I'd be bothered, I wouldn't think it would be relevant to me. But being from the home nations it's all good. No flag waving for me though, mine is folded away for when the roundheads get too confident
Vortigan Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 A whole, long weekend of the usually unheard of overtime for me!! Making hay while the sun shines
Zigatoh Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Not a monarchist in any way, and it all feels a bit like marketing to me, but the Captain's right, compare the Queen to any politician out there and she comes up trumps every time, plus, four day weekend! Time to bring out some good smokes, to 'celebrate' (same as for that wedding thing last year...)
Rushman Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 I guess I will smoke to that --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.630191,-87.069730
canadianbeaver Posted May 31, 2012 Posted May 31, 2012 Hardest working hair on the planet. Come on... She is lovely.
ptrthgr8 Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 As an American, I only celebrate monarchies insofar as it involves celebrating the ejection of the Crown from our shores. I can appreciate the history of it all, of course, but that's about it. The 4th of July is just around the corner. Huzzah!
ptrthgr8 Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 Hence the reason I deleted my original post and apologised. You're welcome to PM if there's a prob. Malice not intended. You must have edited your post as I was responding to it originally - I just now saw it. I've edited my previous response to remove your quote and my reply. We're good! Cheers, ~ Greg ~
Mr.T Posted June 1, 2012 Posted June 1, 2012 As someone with family who were up until the 1960s colonial subjects of her majesty and fought for independence......enough said. Enjoy the long/extended weekend! I hope the weather holds so all of you can enjoy some smokes.
