headstand Posted May 27, 2012 Posted May 27, 2012 I decided to review the Monte #2... Yup - like a voice alone in the wilderness This one has a nice brown wrapper, reasonably smooth but not much for oils. Perfect, and I mean perfect draw. Aroma at cold is of cocoa, earth, poo, and sweetness. Initial flavor is of wood with not much else going on. Smoke is smooth and there is a lot of it, but it's not particularly rich. Not the best of starts. After about an inch things started to improve a bit. Well not much really. Don't get me wrong: this cigar is not crap - it's just suffering from the high expectation everyone has for the #2. First third gets an 85. Things picked up during the second third showing black coffee and cocoa, but the wood still dominates. Smoke is developing a bit more body. Solid burn throughout. 87 for the the 2nd third. Coffee was on order for the pairing, but it's long past noon and time to switch it up to rum. Now it could be just coincidence here; the cigar shifting into high gear at the same time as the rum splashed into the glass, or it could be what we all know and experience with our wine pairings. Rum complements and enhances the Monte # 2. Last third gets an 89. Too bad it didn't start there.
Jnaube Posted June 2, 2012 Posted June 2, 2012 Gotta love the monte 2. This is one of the most smoked puros in the world and they still manage to make them uniquely good. Again, if you have the time to age them, you won't regret it. These get superb with time.
