joshua84 Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Just came back from Italy last month and wish to share something which I thought was quite interesting. Do cigars tastes differently in different parts of the world?. Somehow here in the tropics in Malaysia, I find that cigars which many would have said to be mild (think PLPC), taste more of a medium bodied one. The flavours have quite strong notes and not necessarily I would recommend to a non-smoker (I would recommend the montecarlos instead or maybe a montecristo open junior). But surprising during my visist in Italy (which I happened to brought a few sticks of PLPCs), I noticed that every stick that I smoked tasted much milder than what I used to experience back home. Maybe it's the air or maybe the flight (I may never know). But this has got me thinking that sometimes when cigars are described as mild (and tasteless at times) may not be the case when it is smoked in other parts of the world. Anyone having the same experience?
mazolaman Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Yes. I think sometimes the flight can have a negative, temporary effect on cigars. I have experienced similar when on holiday. Also altitude either effects the cigars, or my tastebuds.
Fuzz AI Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 PLPCs are mild? I find that if I smoke in autmn/winter or after it has rained, flavours tend to be muted.
joshua84 Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 Just another info, the cigars were kept in a ziplock bag throught my visit. Hence it is unlikely that it would have dried out since I was only in Italy for only a week. I'm theorizing that the further you are away from the equator, the milder the cigar will taste. Was having some Monte 4's in Vietnam last year and recalled them being milder too (then again, these were bought at the airport in a 5 pack box so they might have been a little dry). Just for comparisons, i find PLPC milder than BPC and RASCC. Hope this brings some perspective to the topic. Or maybe I just got a batch of mild cigars. On the other hand, I find that HDM Epi 1 to be likened to coffee with milk but no hint of creaminess in Mag 46. I don't buy singles and I have smoked almost half a box of these lately. As for rain, I find cigars smoked after the rain to be slightly more bitter. Ok, maybe over here is either sunny or a thunderstorm. Hardly any in betweens. Cheers.
mk05 Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Hi there, it is in my experience that any cigar that goes through climate changes in the last month or so will perform differently than a cigar that has been resting. This is why certain smokers will not crack a box after shipment for a period of 4 weeks to 6 months before trying them.
bolivr Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 No doubt you are right. For me, the same cigar smells and tastes different just from moving indoors from smoking outside, given that on that day there is a temperature and humidity difference between indoor and out.
Hypersomniac Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 That's why smoking isn't all about the cigar. It is about the cigar, the surroundings, the people around, the whole experience. Smoking a cigar while angry is never as enjoyable as smoking one in a good mood (for me anyway). The greatest cigar I have ever smoked was a Siglo VI my last night in Rome. I don't know if that is because of the cigar, because I was in Rome, because I was able to smoke a Cuban while spending time with my girlfriend in another country, or a combination of it all. My vote is the combination, the whole experience was amazing.
CaptainQuintero Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I'm theorizing that the further you are away from the equator, the milder the cigar will taste. Are you sure it's just tobacco you're smoking? I can see that how much humidity there being in a certain location could effect the flavours, ie rain forest compared to a desert. A cigar could taste bitter if it has absorbed humidity due to the enviroment (rainfall), or it could have more prominent flavours in an arid climate, just as it would be the same as you storing your cigars in your humidor with a low or high humidity and the flavour changes that brings. But I'm not sure if the taste could be effected by differing levels of magnetic force or by some kind of change of your speed around the centre of the Earth due to your location.
ramon_cojones Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 My cigars always taste differently in Vegas. same here, will have to do more data mining and keep taking cigars with me lol i think i will be spending some time at casa fuente next time as far as op is concerned this definitely is the case...while I cannot speak for different countries but different places close to home all have a unique effect and I agree with the other person who said it depends on their environment, this is totally true
headstand Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I've made a connection between cigar taste and outside humidity: I no longer bother bringing Boli PCs or CJs to the coast. I love the rich flavor of these where I live (fairly low humidity), but they are harsh when smoked on the coast. So ya, I would agree.
