Ken Gargett Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 i'll watch pretty much any fishing show and so when i first heard that robson green was doing one, travelling around the world in exotic locations, i was very keen. robson green is one of my fave english actors. think he is excellent. but have been so disappointed with it. i get as excited as anyone when catching a fish but this bloke just bungs it on and makes it look forced and ridiculous. a six inch trout from a pond? high fives, back flips, screaming and yelling as though he has run the length of the field in the last seconds of the world cup final to score the winning try. please. it put me right off it. anyway, last night i caught the last 5 minutes of one episode i would have liked to have seen - in cuba (it was on before three hours of 'burn notice' - does it get better than that?). in the last bit, he was chasing tarpon with the italian mob that do fishing tours there (we hope to chase tarpon in november and from the size of the reels etc, my 12 weight would be like bringing a knife to a gun fight). now i know fishing shows are "manipulated" (aussies will remember that great series - a river somewhere - the nz episode resulted in hordes of aussies heading across to fish the d'urville as that was where they got a ten pounder on almost the last throw of the trip. strange how often on fishing shows they get the biggie on the last throw of a trip. actually, the d'urville was flooded quite a few years back and while it is a great river, the fish peak around 5-6 pounds but it meant the poor river copped a flogging from aussies chasing the big one, which was actually caught on almost the first cast of the trip in the wairau) but this was bizarre. but what i found absolutely extraordinary was that there he was, banging on about chasing these tarpon etc etc and the italians are casting for him. they hooked the fish and handed him the rod. he'd fish for a few minutes and then hand it back, take a breather and then have another go. when it got within 20 metres of the boat, the italian took over and got it in. green then grabbed hold of it and screamed and yelled about the greatest fish he'd ever caught (it was about 50 lbs) and so on and on. he had almost bugger all to do with it and yet had no issue claiming it. i know rob makes jokes about guides casting and so on but i could no more have a guide cast and then hand me the rod than fly to the moon. i'd feel like i was cheating, like it did not count. and then to have them get it in - never! bizarre in the extreme. no matter how hard it might have been pulling, if i had a fish like that on my line - any fish, actually - they would not have got the rod from me with a gun. i now think even less of the show.
orangedog Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 always nice to read the thoughts of a man with principles
Ken Gargett Posted April 12, 2012 Author Posted April 12, 2012 but seriously, where is the fun or pleasure in fishing if some other bloke does it for you?
Munts Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 The best fishing show i have watched was Rob Sitch and Tom Gleisner's A River Somewhere in the late 90's. Great show that one.

edlye Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 I don't fish but like to watch fishing shows occasionally (Swamp People included if alligators count as fishing). My favourite so far is River Monsters hosted by Jeremy Wade.
mazolaman Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 Kenny, agree totally, the man is an arse. He was on some crap tv shows here a while ago, hospital drama rubbish, so he and his mate flogged their 15 minutes of fame death by releasing this awfull dross.... He is the nipple on the right, with a voice like a fart. Seen that show, he's just trying to add some poorly acted drama to a bad show...
Ken Gargett Posted April 12, 2012 Author Posted April 12, 2012 amazing. i like him as an actor, think he is crap as a fishing front man. thought the song was dire - and i am tone deaf, tho that may be a positive for him. this from wikpedia. so clearly i am at odds with the british people. again. Green first made his name as an actor in the BBC series Casualty, but after three series moved to national prominence as Fusilier Dave Tucker in the drama series Soldier Soldier. One episode in 1995 called for Green and co-star Jerome Flynn to sing "Unchained Melody." Subsequently ITV was inundated by people looking to buy the song, and the pair were persuaded by Simon Cowell to release it as a single - a double A-side with White Cliffs of Dover. It stayed at No.1 for 7 weeks in the UK Singles Chart, selling more than 1.9 million copies and making it the best-selling single of the year, and winning the duo the Music Week Awards in 1996 for best single and best album. Subsequently they had two further #1 singles and two #1 albums, all re-makes of standards.[5]
MrDowse Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 I'm sure no-one will be surprised to hear that Satan AKA 'Simon Cowell' is responsible for bringing that particular musical monstrosity into being
CaptainQuintero Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 Yeah can't stand that guy, I tried to watch the first programme but after he went off like he had found El Dorado after sucesfully attaching bait to his rod I turned off.
Colt45 Posted April 13, 2012 Posted April 13, 2012 I am offended by your references to weapons..... As for the show, That's Entertainment! As an aside, I was saddened last week to hear of the passing of José Wejebe (the Spanish Fly) in a small plane crash.
