ptrthgr8 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 I stumbled across this video while looking up some things for a friend: http://youtu.be/wYy1Wh3lOrc Oh how I do love the smell of cordite! This video was taken on my b-day back in 2008. I'm the fat guy in the navy fleece and the Red Wings cap shooting the M1 Garand at the :35 mark and the RPD at the 1:12 mark. (Both rifles are mine.) The dude at the 2:24 mark is a local student shooting my Reising Model 50 .45 ACP subgun. I cannot wait for this spring/summer. More machine gun fun in on the schedule! Cheers, ~ Greg ~
Eltoasto Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Wolverines!! Sorry, couldn't help it. Looks like a a good time. How hard is it to come by an M1 Garand? I would imagine that it in particular would be a very prized piece equipment.
Ken Gargett Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 seriously? i have agreed with rob to keep quiet on the subject of the stupidity of guns provided i am not provoked. i think this qualifies. and yes, i know that while i probably agree with most members of the forum in many matters, i am out of step in this case. the absolute moronic imbecility of humans never ceases to amaze me. and does it get any more moronic than with guns. i'm sure all those students that have just been slaughtered also love the smell of cordite and were looking forward to more fun. though it is perhaps more fun to be aliove. nice timing.
headstand Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 I prefer to assume unfortunate timing rather than intentional heartlessness.

On the other hand, makes it a little tougher for a government to turn tyrannical, no?
Ken Gargett Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 On the other hand, makes it a little tougher for a government to turn tyrannical, no? apols - i really honestly am not trying to be obtuse but i'm not following that comment?
El Presidente Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 I go away for a few hours to have lunch with Lise ..........

Ken Gargett Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 I go away for a few hours to have lunch with Lise .......... the lesson has to be - go for lunch more often!
Eltoasto Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Whoa, yeah I can see how there is a little bit of bad timing there. Ken, here you have an opinion about people and guns. I do agree with your opinion on people
Michel1968 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 the lesson has to be - go for lunch more often! This!
danclough Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 apols - i really honestly am not trying to be obtuse but i'm not following that comment? I believe the benefits of an armed society out weigh the negatives. My odds of getting shot by a crazy gunman are much lower than getting splattered by a drunk driver. Shall we outlaw alcohol? I would argue that a car is a far more lethal weapon than a gun.
mazolaman Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Inappropriate post in my opinion. Possibly the only things I agree with Ken on are Ecology and Guns... I don't think our governments are about to physically turn into tyrants, anymore than they already are.

My odds of getting shot by a crazy gunman are much lower than getting splattered by a drunk driver. Shall we outlaw alcohol? I would argue that a car is a far more lethal weapon than a gun. Oh Dear. That's a pretty poor argument... A car was designed to get you from A to B. A gun, or any weapon, was designed to KILL THINGS. If someone kills you with a car, it is very likely to be an accident. If a gun kills you it is likely to be because someone wants you dead.

My odds of getting shot by a crazy gunman are much lower than getting splattered by a drunk driver. Shall we outlaw alcohol? I would argue that a car is a far more lethal weapon than a gun. so we equate guns and cars? this is one of the most tired old irrelevant arguments going around and, with the greatest respect, usually only rolled out by the most desperate. or is that only when a driver drinks (which i am as opposed to as any rational person even if it has bugger all to do with guns). and of course alcohol and guns is a combination that does humanity proud!

Tired old argument. In countries where guns are common there is way more murders than counties with gun control.
Nate31 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 I realize Im new on the board but as someone who is into this I thought Id try to give a different perspective on this type of shooting. FWIW even as an American I at least have a grasp of overseas culture when it comes to firearms, and don’t mean to sound offensive to anyone on the board or engage in a gun rights battle with anyone. Simply put firearms are a protected right under our Constitution, and there is a reason for that. Its for self defense and protection against government. Its not to dress up like a soldier and go blast targets in the woods (although people are allowed to do that). Due to the nature of our evolution as a county gun rights are protected and people still enjoy that to this day. I have been involved in clay target shooting as well as other forms of competition and even in the UK some of their Olympic athletes had to practice outside of the country to avoid getting charged with a crime. I think its quite sad Olympic athletes cannot practice their sport in their own country due to the onerous laws. I mean its an Olympic sport not shooting FA guns in the US. With regards to crime we have what is called the National Firearms Act which regulates the use of things like short barreled rifles and full auto guns. Basically you have to get a approved by a county (sub state) sheriff and then get approved Federally to own these guns. You have to pay a tax and get a stamp. Its not like you can go to a “gun show” and buy a SBR or machine gun. So these guns you see in these videos are heavily regulated and each one has an individual stamp that approved by the local police and Federal law enforcement. Each owner is accountable for each NFA firearm they own and you can’t lend such a gun to another person. The crime statistics for these guns are extremely low. They would be lower than the European stats or Australian stats for gun violence. If I remember right such a firearm has only been used a few times in criminal acts and two of those times they were from law enforcement guns which are also registered under the same law. So no this is not blood lust or anything like that. Yes we do have mass shootings just as other countries do. I see a Norwegian went on a mass shooting in a country with much more restrictive gun laws than we do, and will face a much less jail term than he would get here. It just goes to show no matter what the laws people can and will do crazy things. In the US we have over 300 million people so even if our rate of crime was the same we would have much more instances of criminal acts like this than other countries just due to our size. At the same time I think its wrong to restrict the rights of millions of people just because 1 person goes nuts and acts out with a firearm. There are thousands of DUI’s here in the states each year which result in deaths yet we are increasing our speed limits, and when I was stationed in Germany most places outside of populated areas had no speed limit. It’s the criminal act that should be punished not the entire populace. I mean one person acts out so we have to punish over 300 million people in our country?
khomeinist Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 personally, i support most gun rights. I am a left libertarian and don't mind saying so..... I just think that it was a silly post for a cigar board. Plus he is a Red Wings fan, and that is just unacceptable......
El Presidente Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Some people like guns. They are not all morons. Some people don't like guns. They are not all Left wing loonies. I regret giving up my guns. I once agreed with it. Govt simply becomes empowered by "Taking things away" for the "greater good". Insert Cigar bars/divans here. This post today of all days ways insensitive but no doubt unintentional. Move on.
Nate31 Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 And just to show we are not all that uncivilized even here in Texas my local grocery store even has a section devoted to Australian wines. Picked this up. Have no idea how it ranks in Australian wine circles but it works for me, and CHEERS!
mazolaman Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 Careful now, wine is dangerous....should be banned....
Ken Gargett Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 And just to show we are not all that uncivilized even here in Texas my local grocery store even has a section devoted to Australian wines. Picked this up. Have no idea how it ranks in Australian wine circles but it works for me, and CHEERS! don't really see it much these days. in fact, i would not be surprised if it was export to the states only. but once, was huge. i think the biggest selling aussie wine in the states by miles. and huge here. i think it was a wine spectator selection for top ten value of the year something like 10 or 12 times in a row. which was far and away more than any other wine from any country. and rob, don't you just love a gun thread!!! and to our new friend, i see more reason here than i usually do from the pro-gun assembly (sorry, rob, could not resist) but with respect, 'one person out of 300 million'? one? he has been a very very busy lad then.
