ChanceSchmerr Posted March 12, 2012 Posted March 12, 2012 Good Morning Fellas! Reading over the posts in El Prez's RE 2013 thread, it occurs to me that it would be quite interesting to really see which Marca/Cigar is getting the most mentions/attention out there, both on FOH and on the 'net as a whole. My tech skills are certainly too limited to put something like that together (some kind of search/compiling software to count the mentions in the forum?), but it would be a fascinating look at what people are really talking about......AND it could be a valuable tool to go to PCC or Habanos SA, in order to push for specific RE's/Marcas to be expanded/brought back/focused on. Think of it - "...Here we see that Diplomaticos had the third-most brand mentions over the past 6 months on FOH, less than only Cohiba and H Upmann. People are talking about Diplomaticos! It's time to have a Dip Corona Gorda RE!" On a more abstract note - it would just be fascinating to get a quantification of what cigars people are talking about. It is a cyclical/evolving process too, so it would change from month to month. Remember when Dip 4s were discontinued? You had lots of people talking about Dip 4's and what a great cigar they were. At the same time, almost no play or mention for the poor Dip 5. Months later, after the last boxes of Dip 4 had been sold away and the furor died down, I recall seeing a great upsurge in interest in the Dip 5 (guys waxing poetic about how much they'd missed it or that they wanted to trade for a box or some singles, etc.)......but almost no mention of the Dip 4!!! The best part is that you get overall a lot of interest in a small marca like Diplomaticos, help that these beleaguered brands sorely need. All that's left is to employ that data, so we can make the powers that be aware of how much we're talking about discontinued cigars! For all I know, private firms could already be doing something along these lines, without ever publicizing it. I wouldn't be surprised if so!

Every person will select their one favourite or multiples depending on the format.
ChanceSchmerr Posted March 12, 2012 Author Posted March 12, 2012 Chris, Create a poll in the post. Every person will select their one favourite or multiples depending on the format. I thought about a poll, but this wasn't quite what I was thinking about. I don't want to quantify people's thoughts in a poll, but rather would like to see the stats if say someone (person or software) combed through alllll of the posts on FOH over the last three months (or 6 months or 1 year or last week), and counted how many times each marca or specific cigar was mentioned, and tabulated all that up, so we could see which cigars/marcas were trending in popularity or attention. This would probably be a massive undertaking, so I don't expect anyone to do it, just that it'd be intriguing to see. Kind of like a Cigar Popularity Index.

All these posts are in a database. Queries for certain strings could do a count. It wouldn't be 100% clean but it can be close. For instance, the Ramon Allones Extra. if you want to search for how many times it's mentioned you can do the following. Write queries to match and count strings. You'd need to account for variations. Some might write down "Ramon Allones Extra" vs "RAE" vs "RAE's" vs "RA Extras", etc. Once you get all those variations counted, you can 'manually" clean up the counts to represent "Ramon Allones Extra". You'd have to do this for every brand/vitola.

PigFish Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Hey Chris how the hell are you? I know I owe you an email... I am awful with email these days!!! I have been thinking about this for sometime now. I have been stewing on an idea and it is something that might be interesting and maybe several of us can pitch in to create it. I have been considering dissembling the daily smoke thread for over a year now. You take the cigar that someone smoked, put it in a spreadsheet. You list the cigar, break out the brand, year if applicable, EL and RE if applicable and rate it to comments 1 to 5 based on poor, below average, average, above average (good), and excellent. Put in the date of the post and who posted it and the post number. It might provide for some interesting results. It would only take a couple of minutes to share an Excel file and divide up the pages of the thread by whole number so several members can work on different pages at the same time. We compile at the end. Any comments? -the Pig
