So I had my friend in the states collect my mail and send it to me. Im speaking about letters, bills, junk mail, etc I usually catch most this online but it's tax season so I knew there would be forms and such. There was also a $700 check from one of my consulting clients. Getting mail in PDC is barely north of hopeless. Getting a FedEx package delivered is slightly easier but not easy. So I had him FedEx it to be held at the Cancun FedEx station. No problem right?

First problem. He told me it cost nearly $100 to ship. I initially thought maybe I had a big load of mail.

Second problem. He declared a value of some $700, because of the clients check. Now it's common in the states to declare a value in case the shipment is lost, but in reality it was just paper and therefore worthless.

I get to the FedEx station to learn I had to pay $711 pesos or approximately $57 USD in customs duties to receive the package, because he declared a value of $700.

Sure I could argue with Mexican customs for weeks that it's just paper, etc, but who wants to do that, so I paid it.

So just when you think my day couldn't get more stressful, I begin to sort through said mail and find a very polite notice from the IRS that they think there is an error on my 09 taxes resulting in an increase in tax of $5000. I think I'm staying in Mexico forever.

Nice. Too bad (1) I had to leave my guns in Texas, (2) count money out since I quit corporate America and moved to Mexico and (3) forget lawyers, refer to number 2.
