finecigar Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Today was one of the first comfortable sunlit days in the midwest of the U.S. No better thing to do than to light up a special cigar. I love those feelings the entrance of spring tends to bring, and this five to six year old cigar paired nicely. For this one I used a large gauged punch cut which seems to work best for me with nearly all robustos. The construction of the cigar was absolutely perfect with a touch that felt as if it'd just been rolled on a table of a factory and handed to me. Honestly is a beautiful looking cigar which was echoed throughout while it had a perfect draw. This was about a 60-80 minute smoke with a great complexity of flavors which included toasted almonds, earthy hints of strong cedar and wood, dark chocolate, and essentially everything you would wish for in a decently well aged cuban. First third was a typical entrance, with no surprises. A smooth, pleasant, and not all that unfamiliar taste for PL's. The only area where points would be lost would be here in this 1st third. Now... the second third: This was a photo during the 2/3rd, which for me was pure bliss. I am not sure how it happens but some cigars just hit you a beautiful surprise! This time during the cigar was so grand that I'd honestly prefer this one over even a Behike! I think this was a lucky spot that really came to life and as I watched the sunset come down with oranges and pinks I was enjoying this toasty, fresh, and beyond-this-world PL. I was blown away to say the least. The final 3rd shifted away from those intensities I experienced in the 2nd and moved more into a highly profiled and almost sophisticated style of cigar. It was such a great ride going from one flavor to a next. I enjoyed the last third as much as the 2nd! It was a completely different cigar during the final puffs. I brewed some coffee to accompany me with this part so maybe that gave some influence. Here is a photo @ the end: All in all, this was a cigar that proved to be one of the best of my year! I also feel that the years of age surely benefited this specific R.E. I cannot wait for years to come as I will try to smoke one of these in 2013,14,15, and so on. Truly is a cigar to be valued and saved. I can tell this one was a special one (some other of these PL's I've had were not as remarkable) and I give my experience a 93/100, with a true potential to reach a 95 or 96 in years to come. Hope you enjoyed my review! I usually do not document every one of my cigar experiences but this was one I will always want to remember. My absolute favorite Asia Pacific Release! ---Adam---
shrink Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 I enjoyed your review, in large part because I agree with your opinion. These are my favorites robustos right now, and they just keep getting better. Loads of sweet caramel and cream, with a spicy, peppery finish and some tang thrown in for good measure. A truly great cigar.
aavkk Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Thanks for the review of a great cigar. This is a cigar I've always had several singles lying around but never sprung for a box. My problem is that there is so much regular production that I need/want AND I figure if I'm going to spend the coin I might as well get another box of Estupendos. They are not that much more... Anyway thanks for listening to me ramble on about my thought process on these...carry on.
charlesod Posted February 18, 2012 Posted February 18, 2012 Thank you for your review. This cigar is currently at the top of my "to be purchased" list.
marleydog Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Thanks for the review. I just bought a couple of these sticks from the czar to try. I love robusto size cigars. These PLs are beautiful. Not sure whether to smoke them or hang them on the wall. Anyway, waiting for better weather and to give them some more time in humidor to settle down from their long voyage. Your review makes it that much harder to wait! Maybe I shouldn't thank you.
Rushman Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Thanks for a nice review --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=20.631717,-87.070600
dicko Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Sounds like a real cracker cigar. I bought some singles of these a couple of years ago and wasnt impressed. may well have to try again
isa Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Just received a box - will have to try one in the weekend - thanks for the wonderful review
Styler Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 I feel like half the posts I make on cigar forums mention this cigar! I have one full box left but I just know that isn't going to be enough (can you ever have enough stock of a great cigar?).
greenpimp Posted March 14, 2012 Posted March 14, 2012 Coincidentally I have had 3 of these in the past week. They are really coming into their own and have more to go, IMO. Good deal of power still but the flavors are really coming through now. Luckily I bought 3 boxes from Rob when they first came out so I can parse them out. These are only getting better...
isa Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Just finishing one - a very good smoke, though the body is around mild to medium. Toasted & sweet flavours are there to enjoy alongwith nuts and spice. Burn is excellent , but the smoke volume is slightly on the lower side. Overall, an enjoyable smoke - my first RE, thanks for the review Adam.
finecigar Posted March 18, 2012 Author Posted March 18, 2012 Thank you all for compliments on the review. I am glad we all share a love for this one. It is quite amazing. Just had another one yesterday
