asmith Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 It made me laugh this morning, the poor guy just can't catch a break. 'Chopper' banned from firing starter's pistol Notorious standover man Mark 'Chopper' Read has been banned from firing the starter's pistol at his son's Little Athletics races. Read, 57, who boasted of killing 19 people during his time as a standover man in Melbourne in the 1980s, applied for a Working With Children Check in September so he could volunteer at Collingwood Little Athletics Club, Daily Telegraph Read said his eight-year-old son Roy had been attending Little Athletics for a year when he was asked to volunteer to fire the starter's pistol for races. It is understood his application was rejected by Victoria's Department of Justice because of Read's extensive criminal history that saw him spend 23 years in jail. Read said he has withdrawn Roy from Little Athletics, claiming the races are fixed. Full article here
Ishmael Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Chopper is a legend man. What a character. One of my favorite films too. Epic performance from Eric Bana.
Fuzz AI Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 What a load of BS! It's Little Athletics and it's only a bloody starter's pistol! You need to do some serious modifications to the pistol to make it fire live rounds. What's he gonna do? Pop a cap in some kid's ass if he beats his boy to the finish line?... well Uncle Chop Chop might, but not with a starter's pistol.
Tan1801 Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I heard this on the radio as well. I think he should be allowed as its a starters pistol ffs. But I can also see the other point of view. He's working with children so a working with children form should be filled out. Said form will definitely reject chopper due to his well known past experiences/criminal convictions, because the same form is used for many other jobs/roles where you're working with children (as the name implies). The issue is I highly doubt that all volunteers for the little aths have their working with children cert. Hypocrisy in a school environment? Never.....
El Presidente Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 I have always resented needing a "Blue Card" (Clearance card) to work with children (Rugby Coaching). If someone wants to give me a hand (say an ex international Rugby player) then by rights they need a Blue Card as well. I have never insisted upon it.
CaptainQuintero Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Political correctness gone mad.. The pommie and US influence from hysterical hockey/soccer mums is making Australia as sterile and boring as a military camp... Soon it will be like the UK where kids get arrested for drawing hopscotch lines in chalk on the streets or Dads accused of being pedophiles for kissing their children goodbye. Magnus That's a load of rubbish ....our kid's aren't allowed outside anymore and chalk is a potentially lethal weapon. How could kids possibly draw hopscotch lines outside with these safety precautions in place?!

You need a background check just to go into your child's school here to help kids with readings or be a helper on a day trip out. Also some schools don't allow photos/videos during end of year plays because you would be filming not just your child, but other people's children. Some also have taken to blocking out other children in class photos and leaving just your child unblocked: School uses smiles faces to block faces
fingerburner Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Im all for so called "Nanny state" working with children checks as it's all fine, dandy, and an overreaction, until someone has to "point on the doll where the bad man touched them". ...but Chopper firing a starters pistol at his son's Little Aths?? C'mon... who cares.
CanuckSARTech Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 A convicted psychopathic criminal should have nothing to do with children.
Ken Gargett Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 just so i undersdtand, there are actually people out there, and indeed, on this forum, who think it a good thing that chopper is allowed near kids? no wonder the human race is just so screwed. why is a bloke who has admitted to killing 19 people, granted most of them were also scum, not locked up for life? instead, he has managed to get his dna into the gene pool. darwin awards have never had it so easy. and rob, you need a card for whatever, because - and i say this with th greatest of respect - it is just possible that you may not be the finest role model ever let loose near kids.

Good gawd almighty, I actually agree with Kenny again here.... Some people's rationales are so flawed. Like Ken mentioned, admitted to killing that many (who knows truely what the number might be inflated to), and some people think it's funny/great/amicable that he wants to help kids??? I don't care about reformation or redemption or any of that crap when it comes to guys like this. Hey - Charles Manson is in jail for the murder of seven people (or, if you want to look at it technically, there's no direct evidence that he ever directly killed anyone himself). So, hell, let's have him volunteer to help out with the school bake sale. Yes, ridiculous.
Ken Gargett Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Good gawd almighty, I actually agree with Kenny again here.... i am on fire today!!
CanuckSARTech Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 i am on fire today!! LOL! Cheers! (And you know I tease - I actually agree a fair bit with what you say sometimes. Except when it comes to the church sometimes. Or airlines. Or ISPs. Or wild meat selection. Or gun ownership. Or....wait. What were we talking about????)
