So I am thinking about pulling the trigger on a 50 cab of 03 HDM Des Duiex's. I have the option of the following box codes and wanted to know if any other BOTL have great boxes with any of the following dates. This is my first aged cab and want to increase my odds of getting a GREAT one. Any help is always appreciated. Thanks, Dean

NPD MAY 03

LOB DIC 03

LOB AGO 03

RSE FEB 03

PUC ABR 03

ORE SEP 03

NPO MAY 03

ORE JUL 03

Sorry I can't help you, but I just have a comment/question.

How is it that the same vitola can be produced in SIX different factories in just ONE year ? confused.gif

Can't be good for consistancy ...

The cab I bought is ORE JUN 03 and so far so good. I don't know how helpful that is, if at all. I say line the particular codes up on a wall and toss a dart.

There seem to have been HUGE quantities of these cigars produced in 2003 - almost all 50 cabs that I have ever seen were from that year.

Sorry, can't help with the codes.

dean, i have a single smoke left from my 50 cab from 03. they have been superb. loved them.

however, the code was ORE JUN 03. so not really much help. but on that, i'd go the JUL or MAY from ORE.

but if coming from rob, or another reputable supplier (i must be drunk), i'd be having them check the contents and make the recommendation (if you like your cigars plugged, smithy's your man - we now have video evidence, unless smithy has erased it).

You could add the followng box codes to your list:

- SUA MAR 03

- RSE ABR 03

- ORE JUN 03

I would prefer FOH advice on content rather than trust a box code as proof of PSP qualities.

Good hunting!

I have two ORE boxes, May and June respectively, one Des Dieux and one Punch Super Selection #1, both fabulous in each/own way -

the other code which seems to be a more frequent one is LOB, also I tried a single des Dieux from a PSF box - slightly different to mine, but terrific again.

However, the best is to have the cab checked by your vendor anyway.

Good luck and enjoy!:peace:

I got NPO MAY 03 and PUC ABR 03. Both look and smell great. BUT... I was happy I could choose between different cabs! Some cabs are great, some not so great. Some cabs displayed a huge aroma of stewed fruits, others a tad more timid but with a lovely touch of black berries. At the end both my cabs have medium oiled darker wrappers (No fan of dark wrappers when dealing with ring gauges 43 or less, so there was a surprise) and displaying the touch of black berries... hmmm this ain't helping you is it?

Quality seem to differ quite heavily. As DCS wrote, content is much, much more important than box code, especially in this case. A quality supplier should provide you what he/she thinks is the best cab available.

Can't help you with the factory either bro. But I have a treasure of a cab produced in ABR 03. I agree with the general consensus content is much more important than code. But I feel that 03 was a great year for Des Dieux cabs

I always have vendors check the stock but I was a bit surprised of the different factories for the one vitola. I know seems to be a highly produced stick that year and wanted to see if anyone had just great results with one factory or crap from another. I'm trying to avoid 50 less than average sticks.

First post, just recently discovered the site. I have a 50 cab from PUC ABR 03 that are some of the best cigars I have ever had.

In general, I have been much happier with earlier 2003 rather than later. More true to marca and more flavor, IME.

If you're unable to inspect, I would personally go with February, and have had good luck with RSE (think it was Partagas?) and ORE. My early 03 Des Dieux have been wonderful.

Why are the 03 Des Dieux 50 cabs still so readily available? It surprises me that they are still available in such large quantities. Anyone else ever wonder about this, or do you just chock it up to Cuba doing Cuba.

Only thing I can come up with is remember reading thin/medium gauges having particulary bad construction during 2001-2002 (I believe it was from El Prez, correct when I'm wrong) So it might be a case of the consumers still having negative sentiments from those years about this vitola (especially in a 50 cab) leading towards a large stock of the 03's. Perhaps no production in 2002 or production planned for 2004 which might also lead to a massive build up?

Looking forward to read other opinions, as I wondered about this as well...

If the factory codes are changed each month, then one factory could produce all of the vitola.
